cam shaft oil seal with cam removed

Evening all,

I had a head gasket failure in my mk1 golf clipper so set about sorting it out. I have had the head skimmed, new valve guides, new valve seats etc. I also ordered a gasket set from GSF car parts.

When i removed the cylinder head I left the cam shaft pulley attached to the cam shaft. I now want to change the oil seal however I cant get the 19mm bolt loose and I don't want to damage the cam shaft.

I have tried putting the shaft in a wood vice and then using a screwdriver to lock the pulley but no amount of pressure seems to loosen the nut.

Does anyone know of a safe method that won't damage the cam shaft? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers all.

you really need an impact gun, if you dont have one try taking it to a local garage :)

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

I was thinking that - I have an impact gun and a decent compressor however it cant be big enough because It won't take wheel nuts off. I have a friend over the road with a big bastard compressor so I will try using his.

Are they notoriously difficult to remove or is it just mine? In the workshop manual it says they are only 80nm which isn't that much.

some are, some are not, it really depends on who done it up! people tend to get carried away!
i worked on a jetta many years ago that i snapped the end of the camshaft undoing the bolt!
thankfully the bolt came out and because it was a nice clean break was able to refit all back together.

good luck :)

Forgot to reply to this thread sorry. I managed to do it with a piece of wood and an impact wrench in the end.

Cheers all. Head should be going back on tomorrow. been busy today and haven't had the chance to sort it.
