cam belt change

Hi,

I want to change the cam belt on my golf 1.8 carb clipper… been quoted ?200… I can't afford this as I'm really short on cash - and it does seem a little high to me?  But really want to change it as I have no idea when it was last done!

Does anyone know a good garage round warwick / general midlands area that would be reasonable to get it done?

Thanks

James

That seems a fair wedge for a simple job.
It may be prudent to invest in a new set bolts for the pulleys as they will either be rounded already or will round while doing the job.
you'll need 7 x 16mm long M8 bolts + suitable washers

Projekt Frustration :

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!

Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.

Hi,

well i thought i might look into doing it myself… took the cover off - all the bolts were in good repair, came off really easily, then looked at the belt and it had no cracks and looked in really good condition, so feel ok leaving it on for now.

Found loads of threads of people doing it themselves on here… and also an online guide from an american site, I do have a new belt and tensioner ready to go… but I might leave the cam belt for a little bit until I'm a bit more confident in my abilities.

Thanks for the info on the bolts, will buy some so I have all the bits ready for it, think I'll buy a load of bits over the coming weeks, then take it off the road and get a few of these niggly things sorted in one go *fingers crossed*

I just have to figure out why it struggles to get to 70mph… and that strange ticking noise it makes…  :dontknow:  (it all adds character)

Hi
Sounds like a good service is needed, and maybe a bit of carb cleaner too? Clippers aren't the fastest cars in the world but they should easily reach 80-90 mph.
Can't really remember how mine was in standard form, but I can remember bringing it back down the A19 from teeside after buying it, there was def no problems with hitting 70mph!
The only thing with doing the cambelt your self is getting the tension right, you need a special tool for that, We managed without, however my mate Sam was helping, he works for VW!
Good luck with the car…

ah yes, well it's not long had a service, and I recently had some fuel probs, which led to it having a new fuel pump / carb flange and cleaning the carb, then noticed the rotor arm was a bit corroded on the end, so a new one of them and distributor cap have gone on

Something's not right!  I don't want a rocket, but I know someone with a 2cv that can go faster and I've got twice the engine!

I've notice a bit of the vacuum hosing is missing - you never know this could be the problem, so ?2 off ebay this morning and a metre of the stuff is winging its way to me!

put on the new vac hose and it's like a different car - she's a rocket, well I left a Daewoo Matiz for behind leaving the office today - which is actually a major improvement!

Now it's developed an oil leak.

the best thin you can do is get youre self the book where it shows how is done . is very simple just put youre disttributor on time and lok for the rotor to face the number one spark cable then look for a little grube on the inside of the cam pully to be close to the nut on the head cover and  make sure the shaft of the distributor does not muve take the belt out then do the revese am from CENTRAL AMERICA WISH I WAS CLOSE TO HEALP
