Big blocked 3 doors (not GTi's)

did VW make any 3 door golfs with 1.5's, 1.6 or 1.8 carb engines. for some reason insurance companys dont like 20 year olds and GTi's, wouldnt mind a driver, but the 1.3 engine is putting me off a bit having had a (mildly warmed over standard) 1.5 for so long. Failing that, anyone know of any sympathetic insurance companys that approve of 20 year olds in GTi's?

VW made the Series 1 Golf with the 1588 cc carb engine in 3 door format. You need either an S or LS model, the "S" signifying the larger engine. Unfortunately they are extremely hard to find. I myself have a '76 1588 3 door LS.

Try a 5 door 1457 cc GX if you can't find one, nice spec and usually well looked after.

No, I am pretty sure big blocks only came with the 5-door on the Series 2, at least in the UK.

An S or LS Series 1 will be anything from 0 (rust bucket, non runner, plastic bumper model) to ?5000 (original/fully restored, low mileage, swallowtail) depending on condition as with any car.

Scirocco's had the 1.8 carb engine and the early ones had the same size valves as the GTI, that should fit in a Mk1.

I think the words "modified" and "20 years old" would mean an insurance premium around the GTI mark though anyway.

The 1.3 Driver is very close in performance to the 1.5 GX, you should drive an example of each before you finally decide...

...and of course there is also the 1980 onwards 1.5 GLS Cabriolet...
