automatic help please

hi people im having a some trouble with my auto mk1 cab 1.8. when i drive the car for over 30 mins and turn it off it will not start again for 30 - 45 minutes.
when i try to start the car it just click as if the starter motor has gone but i have changed the starter motor for a brand new one and it works fine when cold.
i have read on here somewhere that the exhast is just below the starter motor and on long journeys can cook it a bit, so i was wondering if there was a way i could protect the starter a bit by putting a plate inbetween them or something.
if anyone can help/advise it would be much appriecated

No experience of auto set up , but if its cooking the starter you could wrap the part of the exhaust with heat wrap and ties ,loads on Ebay . This would help keep it cool .

Or cover the starter with reflective heat proof material ?

Any one no what was on originally ?

Cheers………..

yeah thanks chudd i thought about the heat protected wrap around the starter but wasnt sure if it possible. that exhaust wrap should do the job.

one more thing i see on another thread i think it was lawsys who started it and he said he has had the sameish problem, but he has blamed it on the gearbox saying that it wont register park until it cool down, so not 100% sure it is the starter now. :banghead:

I'm sure the auto starter should have a heat shield anyway….

so does that mean you think it got nothing to do with the starter?

so then it would have to be the auto gearbox

No, it means don't bother with wrapping the exhaust, etc, find and use the original heat shield. It sounds like your big wire from the battery to the starter; or the earth strap; or the terminals on the battery; or the earthing of the starter to the engine/box, is in poor condition.

One thing worth checking is to temporarily disable the ignition and see if it spins over much more smoothly - this would mean the ignition timing it soo far advanced and when it fires it tries to turn the engine backwards, against the starter.

Can you by-pass the auto park switch ? This will prove either way what is at fault .

I don't think its the start inhibit, because when this inhibits the start, there won't even be a click from the starter motor. I suppose its possible there's a click from another relay, in the fusebox for example……

I've had the same problem with my mk2 1.8 auto a couple of times when it's got very hot with a lot of city driving. All my heatshields appear in place, but I haven't checked the starter wiring. Would the park switch issue only mater if it was in park i.e you should also be able to start it in neutral which I couldn't.
