Auto Choke and running high

Hi everyone

I've recently purchased a 1982 Mark 1 VW Golf 1.6 Convertible, loving it especially in this weather.

There's a bit of work that is needed to it, most of all cosmetic however I am a little concerned with one aspect.

I've seen few different threads on this forum regarding the vehicle reving high in idle due to the autochoke however I can't really see whether anyone has suggested a soluation.

My individual issue is that the car turns over on the button however the revs when idle slowly creeps up to 3000rpm until the Thermastate shows the temperature as well over half way, then the revs settle down and sits at about 1000 revs which is perfect - I wasn't to over concerned about this as it didn't take too long to heat up however now the temparature gauge is starting to flash as overheating - all be it temporalily before cooling down again. It was also does run on after I turn the ignition off but only after I have been on a short run in the car and the revs are still running high.

Can anyone suggest what this might be and how to fix it? - I'm not exactly a mechanic but I'll certainly have a look at simple fixes myself if it is at all possible

Thanks

Ross

timing is way out. pre ignition. get you timing checked and change rotor arm and dizzy cap.
