85 Cabby keeps stopping

Hi Guys,

I have an 85 Cabby on a B plate, 1600cc with an auto box. I've had this car for 6 months and it's been running fine……until last week.

The car starts fine, drives fine at all speeds etc, however at random points in any journey it will die. I knock it into neutral, the engine stalls and I coast to the nearest field gateway. This can happen cold or hot, 2 miles or 20 miles into a journey, at any speed and whenever it feels like it. Once I've pulled over and waited for about 2 minutes the car stars first time and I'm away again for as many miles as the car feel like doing before at all happens again.

Suspecting fuel problems and more specifically air getting into the fuel feed pipe I have just replaced all of the fuel pipes from the tank to the pump. The pipes from the pump to the carb are good. On a test drive just now the same thing happened 5 miles down the road!

Any ideas? Fuel pump? Carb? Someone point me in the right direction please!

Lee.

Ive just got back home with my clipper,  eventually, and am having the exact same problem with my 92 1.8 8v clipper…

I drove mine all the way from sheffield to the club meeting in coventry with no problems but its doing it again now.

Strange how its only been doing it since i fitted the carb flange tho……which would lead you to think it was that but im not sure it is……i used a fair amount of sealer on it too and theres no air hiss..

Anyone any ideas?

Agree, common problem that most of us will encounter at some point, remove the sender from under the rear seat and check for crud in there.

similar symptoms as carb icing, check the warm pipe to the manifold is there, and the metal shround round the exhaust manifodl is still attched. next make sure the vac line from the carb to the rear nipple on the side of the airbox is fitted, and the one from the front nipple on the side of the airbox to the warm air flap mech is also there.

last of all, make sure the warm air flap actually opens when the engine is running :)

All apears ok apart from a loose red wire that goes from the top of the backend of the rocker cover to the carb..

I thought it was an earth wire?

Could it be that?

I had the same problem

Hi there,

My vac pipes were all over the place, and needed sorting, plus the carb flange needed replacing.

Something that alot of people don't mention on here, which my mechanic (60 + years with lots of Golf history) is that the carb flange mount can warp, and hence needs skimming.

He did this with mine by hand, saying it needed flatting off….

Once this was done, mine ran better, but the problem persisted. It didn't stall anymore, but did lose power…..mine would now drive, if i pulled out the choke….

I then changed the carb and the dizzy. (Shame i did both at the same time, as i'm still not sure what sorted the problem!!!)

To be honest i think I had two problems!!

I would recommend, check / change the dizzy (i bought a new one which was faulty out of the box, so beware!! - check the vac!) - ?80 GSF

Try the car, if still no joy, then look towards the carb. I think mine had dirt in the jets which would block every now and again! Mine generally stalled / lost power when i went round a corner or up / down a steepish hill….which suggests the dirt moving around the carb and getting sucked into the jets….

Hope this helps…..don't give up….mine gave me grey hair…but now its sorted!! WOW!! Goes like a train! It'll be worth the hastle….

I did remove the fuel lifter to check the tank, and mine was clean…so didn't think it was a fuel / rust related problem.

Check for my very long post - Kangaroo problem now sorted..for more info…

i have sorted my problem its not iced carbs or blowing manifolds its shit in the pipes and tank it can be solved by blowing the lines and cleaning the fuel sender out. i just blasted air throught the lines and wedged welding wire though them
