4-2-1 branch manifolds

Whilst stripping the head and rear discs from our donor car (e reg, gti) for putting onto our mk1 cabby gti, I noticed that our mk1 had a 4 into 1 exhaust manifold and the mk2 had a 4-2-1 manifold.

Now I understand that the 4-2-1 setup should be better for performance, but has anyone on here changed their mk1 gti exhaust/manifold for this type. If so, what exhaust was it and was there a noticable improvement.

As I will be free-flowing the donor head, I wanted to know if the 4-2-1 modification was also worth doing at the same time ?

the later clipper mk1 has 4-2-1 manifold with the "c" clip's,same as
scirocco mk2.

4-1 is generally better, but I guess relative like any other mod, with other mods it makes a great package but on it's own on a standard car may not make too much difference. Can't hurt to use one!

I always thought 4-1 provides better top end power and a 4-2-1 provides more mid-range torque :dontknow:
