1b3 carb??? 1.5 Auto Issues..
I've had issues such as low idle, and firing on 3 on start up with an auto choke that rarely wants to have a go.. resulting in a steady bit of throttle till he settles.. over time this developed into a misfire throught the rev range after say a 20 minute run on a hot day..
We adjusted the timing at my dads garage and there after it idled fairly fine and drove smooth round the block.. till the 20 minute drive back home where it turned lumpy as hell!
I then fitted one of those electronic ignition kits you replace the points with. It started up perfectly and idled soo smooth which I left it to do so for 5 minutes and then it started to miss occasionally which then resulted in a stall. I could start it up instantly though and would happily idle for a few more minutes before doing missing and stalling again..
So is this my carb? I understand the weber replacement is the discontinued 36 tlp.. will the 32/34 dmtl for the 1.6 fit?
The other strangeness is my head says 1.6 on it.. but I have a jb block..
Cheers

and i was informed jb engine code is a 1.5 even though it says 1.6 they use the same block in the factory and bore them different sizes but jb is 1.5.

the auto choke is not really liked by many..
i have a 1.5 auto also and what i have noticed is that when my oil level is low my auto choke does not work well, maybe coincidence..
The carburetor gasket is prone to getting worn out, its the rubber that mounts the carb onto the manifold.. if this has an air leak them your car will run lumpy.
I also had a problem with my car which used to last around 10 - 20 mins before tapping out.
The problem was that the carb was not getting enough fuel as the fuel reservoir was blocked..
what you should first do is pull out your fuel feed pipe from the fuel pump and get someone to crank your engine a few times to see if fuel is getting past the fuel reservoir ( fuel filter)
if not then you can direct the fuel line to the carb or get a new filter from VW for around £12.
otherwise a rusty filler neck is also a common problem with these cars as the rust is carried forward and causes problems then.
This is all from experience and as i have the same car i thought i could maybe share my experiences.
HOPE IT HELPS!

1.5 auto
after fitting i believe it helped with the fireup of the car.
could be your problem.
worth a try as it costs around £15 and a simple diy job.
also check your vacuum set up.
