1.8 MK1 Tignition timing

Well I'm still fiddlien with my daughters golf and have come up against another matter not covered in the wrong manual I'm using
Wonder if anyone on here could help? I need to know the ignition timing setting for a 1988 MK1 golf Cab 1.8 it's the EX engine code model

why doesn't it seem right?
can you let us know what it's doing.
is it hunting?
is it pinking?
etc.

how are you setting the timing? are you using a strobe and if yes at which end of the engine.

are you disconnecting the vacuum advance pipe?

Hi, I'm using a Gunson strobe on the crankshaft pulley, reason I say that 6 degrees doesent seem right is that all other data I've managed to put together is around the 12-18 Degree mark. I have a feeling that the 6 Degrees may be for the GTI model?
I'm getting really confused with this now  :?

Car is 1988 mk1 cab, 8 valve carb model (non GTI)
Engine is EX code

Any help greatly appreciated  :)

The haynes manual for the MK11 with this engine states 17 to 19 BTDC.

6 BTDC vac hose removed is for 1.8 DX (MK1 GTI engine)

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I thought 17 ish was for the fully electronic injected cars only

I think you'll find the timing mark is on the flywheel, its the dash not the dot, I would just set it to that.

Note the settings are for 4 star so you'll need to run it on super unleaded
