Not many people tune the Clipper because its so easy to get +22bhp simply by buying a GTI instead. However if you desparately need auto transmission, then since the GTI doesn't come with that option, you'd have to start there. Twin carbs won't give that much extra power for the cost/hassle. You'd probably get just as much (or little) from a single Weber which has been re-jetted. You could use the GTI exhaust system including manifold, and a GTI cam, plus Weber carb rejetted and set up on the rolling road to maybe achieve 100-105bhp. I doubt there's much more possible. For any more power, you'd need to look at an engine swap or expensive work rebuilding the bottom end (balancing it, so it can rev higher) and/or porting and polishing the head. Both of these are more expensive than an engine conversion.

HI, THANKS FOR THE ADVICE, AS MUCH AS I WOULD LIKE TO EITHER DROP A GTI ENGINE IN OR BIGGER FOR THAT MATTER MY WIFE IS NOT AS KEEN, MAINLY BECAUSE IT IS HER CAR AND SHE LIKES AUTOS (AT THE MOMENT). UNLESS I CAN TEMPT HER WITH A VR6 AUTO CONVERSION. MMMMMM. BUT YOU HAVE GIVEN ME STUFF TO THINK ABOUT.

THANKS, STEVE.

Hi.

Twin carbs would be a nightmare on any car used daily, and fuel bills would be huge! Also the costs involved would be around the £1k mark.

I'm not sure why Paul said a GTI cam? :dontknow:  I have a clipper and currently run a dellorto 40 and a kent 286 cam on a standard engine and it has certainly improved the sluggish lump it came with without costing the earth. I think my parts bill was about £500, fitting it myself.

I certainly wouldn't go to the hassle and expense of a swop for a GTI engine for not much gain. There's alot of expense and hassle to swop from the carb to injection!

Depending on funds and time I'd get a list of bits you'd want and search them out, I'd prob go for a weber carb, uprated cam and a stage 1 flowed head, some good plugs leads and a rolling road session.

Projekt Frustration :

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!

Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.
