1.8 carb motor running really bad!

This is gonna be hard to describe but i will do my best. Firstly it a mk1 clipper cab with a 1.8 auto motor with a webber carb. Now it always starts fine but its running really poor. You really have to hope that when you press the go pedal that the revs dont drop too much and it goes but it only goes if you put your foot flat to the floor. Ive recently just bought the car back as i owned it before. In that time i hasnt had any changes made and wasnt used but garaged for over a year, it ran great when sold. So i thought it probably just needs servicing. So far ive had redex in the tank, put a new carb base on, cleaned out the carb, fitted a warm air feed to the airbox, renewed all vac hoses, replaced spark plugs, dizzy cap and rotor arm and cleaned the air filter. After all this it ran great for the 1st 30ish miles then went back to crap! Its had shell optimax in too if that helps.

Ive now got a new coil, ht leads, fuel filter and possibly a fuel pump to fit.

Im torn between an ignition fault or a fuel problem. It sometimes will run fine for a min at most then go all lumpy and kangaroo style again. I also noticed it seemed ok for a short while after being stood for 10 mins which makes me think its a fuel problem.

Has anybody else had a similar issue or can sugest anything?

Hi

have you changed the fuel filter? it could also be crap in the tank i have had this, rust blocking fuel feed from the tank you could try taking pipe off carb blowing down it then start car and see if it runs any better if its crap in the tank it might tick over alright once crap has moved from feed, the problem is when you drive and fuel slosses about it could get blocked quicker hope this helps you might be better asking zorba-01 cos he is a bit more clued up than me cheers mate

Hi guys ive got a MK1 golf its a X reg and ive owned it for 7yrs

Yeah changed the fuel filter. To date ive also changed the fuel pump, carb base, cleaned carb, coil, plug leads, spark plugs, cap, rotor arm, battery. Not much else it could be really. Only things left are the ignition module and fuel acumulator. I seem to be getting fuel ok as i can see it running down the return line.

Would I have to drop the tank and clean it out?

Well ive fixed it! Yipeeee! Turned out the coil was shorting itself out and eventually packed in all together plus the carb was gunked up. My 1st clean out wasnt enought, i had to stip it completely and clean with mr muscle oven cleaner, cotton buds, petrol and a high pressure air line. Running brill now!
