Just a thought, before you mess around adjusting carb, double check your timing.
I had a mechanic mess about with my carb trying to get a decent idle, he couldn't do it, then a neighbour of mine who works for the AA checked the timing and found it was well out, he reset it, and now idle is perfect.

The previous owner did a cambelt change and must have justy guessed the timing position.

Anyway hope this helps.

Took me ages to find the idle adjust,,, its a nut on the rear of the carb on the lefthand side, its tight between the carb and bulkhead so whip off the airfilter first…
Good luck :D

Advancing timing usually raises the idle, retarding lowers it - wouldn't go near that mechanic again if he didn't even think to check the timing!

Pierburgs on autos and cars with air con have two idle adjustment. The standard idle adjustment is the same, but there is an additional idle nut next to it - to the right of it if you're sitting in the car. This is called the increased idle and controls the idle when an auto is in gear or air con is on - Haynes explains process for setting it.

I recently found this invaluable manual for the 2E2, covers a lot of set-up, running and vacuum system etc - download and print out :P http://vwa1.dadoghouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/02/2E2%20service%20instruction.pdf

Mine does the same specialy from a cold start made worse by the fact i have a dogey starter motor so if it cuts out on a junction it might not start again :S very embarrassing lol but is normaly fine after a ten min drive.
Just has a very jerky idle and a tad to low still. ? :S

Check the timing before you change the idle speed guys!

check everything as per my 2e2 guide BEFORE you fiddle with anything. otherwise you may just be working round the real problem. the worst thing you can do on a 2e2 is mess about with settings and linkages without actually trying to find the problem first, as its a real pain to reset everything back to factory
