1.6 GTI (EG) Cold Start & Idle problems

Post

Hi all,

After trawling the Internet and the very brilliant (brownie points :ocf_emoticons__icon_wink:) forum here I’ve come up with a few theories, but id like some advice from people that have experienced it.

I’m not a mechanic by any means but I am competent enough to try things.

Background of the car is its been stood in resto mode for 3yrs but now back on road but only since last Friday (7th June) and has been fine(ish) when driving but I put that down to it being stood that its a bit lumpy and it is getting better.

The problem is starting from cold and it seems to be cold ambient temp as well as cold engine. I tried to start the car yest morning (11 degrees C ambient temp) and it just kept turning and not firing then half firing spluttering then stalling again if I keep my foot planted eventually it starts but damn it sounds rough like its firing on 3cylinders. So I left it for the day and thought ill have a look when I get home from work, about 5:30pm I put the key in and it started first time no problems I didn’t even have my foot on the gas (17 degrees C ambient temp) still sounds rough like its on 3cylinders until its warm or above 2ish K revs then it drives sweet.
This morning I tried again and it’s the same about 11 degrees C outside and the car will not start!!

Last night I checked the 5th injector, which wire should I be getting power through, both? and would I only get power when cranking? also would all this depend on the WUR? and even the TTS?

What colour wire should be going into the AAV? At the moment I have two connectors that could plug into it (one isn’t the blue connector for the 5th injector). After checking with my mulitmeter both plugs are giving 12v through one wire when the car is running. Sorry I can't remember the colour one def is white/red or maybe red/white, infact i think its the same coloured wires as the ones that go to the TTS. Id have to check when i get home.

The spark plugs and HT leads were changed while in garage, it’s been setup properly to get it through the MOT as the CO was well out. The Dizzy and rotor arm are fine too.

This is my first real introduction to K-jet so please bare with me… I think it might be WUR and 5th injector power related but like I say I don’t have enough experience to back that up.

Failing me being able to figure this out does anyone know of any one/garage near Leeds, West Yorks that are good with K-jets.

Thanks to anyone that can help it’s much appreciated.

Could be leaking fuel injectors, try unplugging the 5th injector electrical plug (its a blue plug on my dx engine) then start the car. The 5th injector could be flooding the car on start up so making it run lumpy. That's what happens to mine, been running with the 5th injector plugged in of a month with no starting problems, just cable tied it out of the way.
Give it a try and let us know how you get on.

AAV should have red/white and brown wires, red/white is fuel pump live. I cant think what the other plug could be if its close by?  the wur should also have red/white and brown wire again fuel pump live, this is on the front though so nowhere near the aav.

5th injector should have 12v when cranking only, so once car has fired it shouldnt make any difference to the runnign of the car, but check the 5th injector thermoswitch in the front flange, this should have a 12v when cranking feed and the other wire goes to the 5th injector.

Thanks for the replies guys ill have a look when i get in.

Just for info got home last night and it fired up straight away! I think the car just isn't an early starter…

Looking at what youve said rubjonny i may have the WUR and TTS connectors the wrong way round.

I'll let you know the outcome.

cheers
