1.6 8v Cabby Power

Hi Folks,

My '86 cabrio runs a 1600 8v engine on carbs (and an automatic transmission) and I'm looking to increase its performance.  I considered an engine swap but I have decided against it.  The roads in Bermuda are narrow, twisty and fairly hilly.  We've also got a speed limit of 30mph so I'm not looking for massive horsepower but I'd still like to get more out of the standard 1600.

I see a lot of people running motorcycle carbs on the old motors and I'm thinking I'd go down this road.  I'm no mechanic but logic would suggest that a little head work, a free-flowing exhaust and a spark upgrade would help the old girl breathe better and give it a little extra oomph. I thought about changing the cam but I'm not so sure it would be worth it given the driving conditions.

So for all those who have gone before me, what size carbs would suit the little 1600 engine and what else can I do to increase the efficiency of the engine?

Thanks very much.
