1.5 warm start issue

Post

Hi guys,

I've got a bit of a problem with the 1.5 engine with auto gearbox that I'm putting back into my jetta. It starts fine when it's cold but after a long run it won't start. It won't even turn over, no clicks or anything. I've had a google and people have had issues with injection models but not carb.

Someone mentioned that it might be something to do with the exhaust coming over the starter motor on auto models. Could this be the issue?

Cheers,

Ollie

if it wont even crank its probably the starter, as you say auto models suffer from heat soak from exhaust to the starter. a vw approved mod is to wire up a relay inline with the trigger wire to give it some extra cranking juice, to test if this will help first run a chunky wire from the battery +ve straight to the starter spade the next time this problem occurs. if it cranks over lovely then fit yourself a relay. if not then replace the starter motor, and be sure the metal heat shield is still there
