1.5 electrical problems Points melting! Wrong coil? HELP!

Can anyone help me with my 1.5 electircal problem. I bought my 1982 Cabriolet 1.5 GL a few months ago and it isn't running well. The points keep melting! I've been told its probably got the wrong ignition coil on resulting in too much power going to the pointsd and burning out. The Coil has the markings BVS 11p12 45334A 30 97 on it. The distributor has markings inside code: 2275 and on the outside tag <2
Anyone knoiw if these are the right ones for a 1.5? And of not what parts do I need to get her back on the road without melting? :banghead:

Not yet no. I'll try this next.
One other thing I spoke to my local VW specialist about the car as its had a lot of work done in the engine bay re-wiring. The engine code is an FR not the expected FK. According to haynes manual this makes it a 1.6 engine? In which case the timing etc is different?

THE PLOT THICKENS!
I've just spent some time researching engine codes and VIN's. It appears that my car is a 1983 car not a 1982 car as the registration suggeste. This probably happened when the car was'imported' from the Isle of wight!

Anyone interested in decoding their VIN for info- have a look at this:

FR is a 1.6 Scirocco carb engine. Of carb engines in 82/83 the cab came with either JB 1.5 engine or EW 1.6 engine.

What is the year letter for your vin? The year letters were actually used by VW from 1 August to 31 July. I assume you have a DW chassis. This could have been built any time between August 82 and July 83. What is the reg letter?

Regards the part numbers for the coil etc, they aren't VW part numbers so hard to tell what are they are. What is the make?

Cheers

I spoke to the local specialsts again and they also confirmed that the VIN ID is 1982 to 1983- Car is registered on a Y plate and VIN code is DK.
They also said its likely to be a Scirocco engine and I recall the previous owner being into racing sciroccos.

Problem I have noiw then is a 1.6 engine running with a 1.5 carb, manifold and exhaust and god knows what ignition!

I've searched the net for the coil part numbner and the only match was for a Nissan Micra!!

I've got some pics of the engine bay but can't work out how to upload them here!

wrong engine carb and coil!

HELP! So far I've found out my 1982 1.5 Golf has actually got a 1.6 Scirocco engine coded FR. It's still got the carb etc for a 1.5 which appears to be a Solex 1B3 but hasn't got auto choke. Will this run okay on a 1.6 or am I best upgrading to a wbebr carb. Is the weber 32/34 DMTL best option? :dontknow:
I've got a new coil in an attempt to stop the points burning out but now need a ballast resistor as this has also been removed from the car. Would the ballast resistor being absent be the main cause of the points burning out? I've also noticed the manifold has a pre-heater in the wires for which have also melted! Is this really necessary?
To make matters worse I've been told by the local specialist that the FR engine would have had electornic ignition. Is it worth getting a Lumenition kit for it? :banghead:
Getting very frustrated with this one!

The FR engine has to be with a solex 2B5 originaly
with the bosch coil (number 0 237 022 007). Try putting a Perbirg 2E2 on it. If the carb is ok you won't recognise your car :)

Will this carb fit on what appears to be the 1.5 manifold- was there any difference between 1.5 and 1.6 manifolds?

If you can show how your manifold looks like I can tell you, but I think it won't fit it

Trying to get a pic up. In the meantime I've bought a spare Golf! A battered 1.6 Driver Mark 2 which has the weber 32/34 DMTL already on and I can nick the inlet manifold as well i assume. Not bad for ?50! Anyone need any Mk2 parts? The cars going for scrap soon.

How do you get a manfold off a Mk2 1.6 with the engine still in? Looks like I need to get the exhaust manifold off to get at the fixing bolts? Anyone ever managed to get a inlet off with the engine in?

You can get the fuel manifold off without the engine out. You don't need to take the exhaust off, in fact I had to take the inlet off my GTI to get the exhaust manifold off. There will be 6 Allen key bolts holding the inlet manifold on. Two are viewable at either end, the other 4 are hidden away in the channels on the back of the inlet. You'll need a long allen key, or extension arm to get at these.

Wow that was fast!
Thanks for the info- I think the Mark 2 engine bay has the bulkhead over the top of the manifold area- can't remember my mark 1 being that hard to work on. Just goes to show you shouldn't try to improve perfection.

Ahhh… got confused there thought the mk2 1.6 engine was in your cab. Surely you shoud still be able to get it off without the engine out though? Baring mk1 fuel tanks, VW are usually that thoughtless. Are you in a position to stick the front of the car on axle stands and get at it from underneath, there should be a bit of space between the block and bulkhead to get at it from.
