1.5 carb troubles
any one know of any other carbs that will fit on a 1.5 GL? the standard one is knackered, and i would prefer one that could get me a bit more power and preferably have a KandN that will fit on, cos the standard one doesnt. will i have to get a new manifold made up? any one recomend a place that could do that? also anyone recomend where i could get a subtle looking s/s exhaust built for not too much ????
cheers. alex

Get a direct replacement weber carb, make sure you replace the rubber mount at the same time

We're in a similar boat with our 1978 1500… and EurocarParts say they've run out of conversion kits.
Anyone got any other suggestions, cos ours is getting almost undriveable - a problem as its my everyday car! :dontknow:
Thanks!

Vick_b, how is it undriveable? Do you get flat spots, power surges and/or misfires under load?
Sounds like new MK1 replacement carbs are becoming harder and harder to get. Eurocarparts said they only had a few weber conversions left in stock when I got one for my Golf C last autumn and GSF haven't stocked them for some time. Is your carb beyond reconditioning? You should be able to get hold of alright one one from a scrappy to rebuild.

It stalls at junctions and when slowing down coming up to a junction and occaisionslly when pulling out from junctions, sometimes surges and is bad on fuel.
If you can heel toe, it is just about drivable!!!

….been there myself, doesn't make for fun driving - not good when pulling out of junctions or across roundabouts 8O .If you can heel toe, it is just about drivable!!!
The bad fuel economy sounds like its def carb. However, I had a lot of what seemed to be carb problems, including stalling and surging. Replaced carb with weber which made definite improvement, but problems seemed to come back after a couple of months. Out of desperation I cleaned out vacuum pipes coming off carb and airbox warm/cold air flap and temp sensor in air box with WD40, also replaced points and condensor. Couldn't believe the difference it made, smooth, responsive throttle, better cold starting and less need for choke.
You could try a rebuild kit for your carb. Also, try these peple, might be able to supply a new one Car Specialists: Owner's Manuals & Fuel Systems

Thanks for that I will give them ago.
Apparently one of the problems my carb is the rubber mounting block is perished and these are hard to get hold of so reconditioning would not cure this would it?
Thanks

Think you can still get new rubber mounts from Car Parts & Spares -- Buy Online with Fast UK Delivery | GSF Car Parts . If your current one is dodgy and letting cold air into inlet manifold would imagine it would cause problems you describe.
