1.3 citi big block carb engine running hot

Post

Hi I own a vw citi golf 1.3 the engine is the same as the 1.6 carb ( presumably for hotter running conditions) anyway I was in my wag down south at the weekend and she was running hot most the way , when I got back on tuesday I changed the water pump and thermostat but still no fix . The car seems to run just above 90 and will raise quickly when parked . Looking at the dipstick and oil filler cap the head gasked hasnt gone and I stripped and cleaned the carb but still has the same problem when the car is hot after the pressure cap is released water with burst out I know at atmospheric pressure it should boil but to my knowledge never usually as bad cant seem to get my head round this problem as I have tried to bleed and get rid of air locks three times :/ any help would be great cheers .rob

Perhaps you've got some blockage in the radiator matrix. I'd take the top and bottom hoses off and flush it thru until the water runs clear. While you're at it you might as well flush the block and heater matrix. Let us know the outcome

Well today I took the rad off and flushed it through but its fine the rad is fairly new so shouldnt be any problems with it . I messed about with thermostats one brandnew (in the car ), one spare (genuine) and the original ,the new thermostat seemed to only open properly at boiling point where the genuine one would be fully open before boiling point and the original was the same as the brand new one . I brought a new temp sensor aswell and after fitting the genuine thermostat it seemed promising temprature was at 90 or just after the bulb but then after a long journey when I got to a roundabout temprature shot up but after I was back on the road sat just above the bulb on the gauge . After pulling over and having a look at everything it all seemed normal so I think im dealing with an electrical fault as the car seems to perform well and only on occasion will take a few turns and throw a backfire out , gonna look for any dodgy wiring tomorrow and see where I get but im still pretty well confused
