'93 Cab warm starting problem

hi folks,
hope someone out there can help me out……..really dont want to get rid of the clipper but episodes like this just make me lust after something more modern and reliable!!

here goes……

car('93 1800cc non GTI)

starts 1st time every day when cold……:)
WONT start after having engine off after short/long journey but will start hours later(when presumably cold again).the electrics come on and the "click" is present but no starter motor.?????

hope ive described enough for someone to help out.!
driving(or not) me bananas!!

i used to have this problem with a 205 gti that i had and it used to drive me mad. the best thing i can say is replace the starter but before you do that check your engine earth make sure you have the correct battery fitted (the correct amp hour etc) as the wrong battery could burn out your new starter. and make sure the cable from battery to the starter is good....

Is the Cabrio an auto or manual gearbox?

Autos have the starter wedged up under the exhaust and get cooked leading to bad starting esp when hot.

Even if a manual, the symptoms you describe are symptomatic of a starter motor on its way out and/or duff wiring connections.

I have also had a dodgy ignition switch play up and give similar problems but it would be more random rather then engine temp related.
