WONT start after having engine off after short/long journey but will start hours later(when presumably cold again).the electrics come on and the "click" is present but no starter motor.?????

Autos have the starter wedged up under the exhaust and get cooked leading to bad starting esp when hot.
Even if a manual, the symptoms you describe are symptomatic of a starter motor on its way out and/or duff wiring connections.
I have also had a dodgy ignition switch play up and give similar problems but it would be more random rather then engine temp related.
