'87 Clipper 1.8 Carb: The splutter is back...

Hi all,

I have a 1987 Clipper 1.8 Carb and about 18 months ago I had a issue with the car spluttering and then cutting out on longer journeys. I had a load of rust in the tank and fuel filler pipe, so I had those replaced and the carb serviced. Fixed the problem.

Now its back :(

I have checked the fuel filter and thats clean and I had the carb serviced by my local garage on Tuesday. But it splutterd and cut out this morning on way to work. I left it for 5 mins and then it started and drove fine.

Any ideas…..?

Hi, i have had similar problems myself, it is worth checking the flap in the intake for the air supply (prone to sticking), it is located in the black plastic airbox where the vac line from carb fits, also, how is your flexy metal pipe from airbox to exhaust manifold? (i think), also if you have had a rotten filler neck and crap in the tank it would be worth looking at the vapour seperator too as this is prone to holding rust in it and releasing it into the carb at will, also the vapour seperator will in time rot away internally and send copius amounts of crap to the carb.

Thanks for that! I will check those tomorrow.

I had a look in the tank today, through the fuel sender unit under the rear seat; there is quite s lot of very small sand size particles in there, I went fishing with s magnet on a chain and cleared fair amount out. There is a filter on the unit that sucks from the tank, this has very small holes in it and looked like some were blocked. I did consider taking it off, but I guess that will just move the problem up into the in line filter under the bonnet. I will see how it drives over the next couple of days!

Yeah i wouldn't take the filter off the sender unit, my car hasn't got one for some reason and it did me no favours at all, i keep meaning to get another from BBT. They are only about £3.
