My Gti Resto continues (Help! I've got a question to ask...)
Just updated due to some pics not working!
This is what it looked like when I first bought it.
I wasn't amused at what I found today, I thought I bought a resonably sound car that needed minimal work, Looks like I was wrong, This car had bodge after bodge repairs over the years.
The welding in areas left alot to be desired for and was covered in heaps of filler and painted over heavily with underseal. Serves me right for forgetting to take a magnet with me when buying it.
I'm now looking at…..
2 Inner wings
2 Inner sills
2 Outer sills (Already got)
1 Floorpan (Maybe)
2 Rear arches
2New Wings (Already got)
I've got a job and a half to do now lol! Oh well…Trundle on as they say.
Here's the pics of todays labour.
First I stripped the interior out and stated clearing all the floorpans of that black sticky stuff (What is this stuff btw?)to see what the extent of the work is.
Left side is pretty much the same but still need to remove that blcack stuff.
Took the wings off to see what the inner wings were like, They seemed solid till I discovered they were covered in some sort of stonechip protection which seemed to be the only thing holding the wings, On as I discoverd when I went to un bolt them.
Dodgy plate over job
Seen this awfull weld job and noticed something odd about it (Apart from the filler that was lurking in there too)
Looks like a bit of paper!!!!!!
No idea what it means though.
Holy moly!!!!! Not as bad as it looks. I'm quite confident I can fix it.
This fell off…..
From here…..
An thats about it really! I offered up the wings roughly to see if they would line up with the rest of the body and I'm sure they'll fit with little fuss when it comes to bolting them on. But that's a long way away lol!
I think this one is gonna stretch out like the beetle did!
Here's what she looks like the now.

Steering wheel is ready to come off when it's on the trailer as too the wheels. Everything else is just rotten. This was one bad apple mate. Has to be seen to be believed! 8O

It's been a while since I've been on but now the summer is over, I'm putting the beetle away and I'm going to start working on the golf.
I've ordered new panels and sills (It doesn't really need them but i'm replacing them anyway) and some other goodies such as lowering springs and a webasto sunroof to replace that unsightly sunroof thats sitting at present in the hole in the roof.
Also going to order up a set of deep dish rondels that I've spotted, They should look sweet with the car lowered.
Can't wait till it all arrives!

And here's what I've done today………….
Done a bit more work today, Not a lot mind you as I'm still waiting on a panel that I need to weld into the front of the inner wing.
Hey…It's a start, I purely done it just to get me motivated again. Also had to pick up some sheet metal today so's to finish off the job on sunday.
I missed out a pic when I had the rot cut away but I'll be sure to get it when I do the other side next time.
Cleaned up the repair panel in prep for welding
Wing before I started
I missed a pic here when I cut out the bad panel. Doh!!!!
Offered it up and clamped into place after I cut the rot out and measured for the new panel.
Tacked in for now, I will finish it off on sunday along with the rest of the holes you see  I also have to do the rest of the welding at my house as the generator cant handle the welder too great
Offered up the wing and it sat perfect first time!
I also picked up a set these for ?50 this week as well as a minted interior for ?45 from the bathgate show….
These should look the dogs goolies when I fit the 60mm lowering springs and shocks I bought for it too
Thanks for reading and more updates will follow……And soon I hope lol!
