Golf Mk1 E Reg

Hey there slightly new to the forums.
Just really wanting the oppinions of you guys on this golf I've been.

Please read and please reply asap.

Just some questions about this Mk1 I'm interested in before I buy it.
I was house sitting with ourlass yesterday for her sister, when peering out the dining room windows I noticed a lonely looking Mk1 golf sat out side all covered in leaves and treesap.

So what did I do? Went round and asked if it was for sale what was wrong with it and how much he wanted.

To my delight (although I'm not counting my chickens yet) his younger brother said that him and his mother were discussing that they wanted rid of it earlier that day. So I asked the young lad what was wrong with the lonely mark1 and he replyed with the following.

"Well my brother baught it home a while ago wanting to ristore it but now he has a kiddie and no time, but it needs a new carb, I've bodged one togeather out of 4 old carbs but it could need a new one. I've put full GTi interior into it and it needs a new exhaust." So ofcourse me not been an idiot and all asked if it turns over, and if he has the logbook for it.
"Yeah it turns over but like I said it needs a new exhaust and a new battery but apart from that all it needs is tuning as it's not preforming as it should" So I gave him my number and asked him to call me lateron when he had made sure his mother and brother want rid of it.
But I couldn't help but walk around to the back of the house and have a look at it. the body work is AMAZING from what I can see. No rust on the arches, no rust around the windscreen none on the upper sills or the bottoms of the doors. it really does look corrosion free. I did notice however the let hand side wheels were off (and holding the car up funnily enough) and the hubs and disks look a little rusty but they might crack free with a little persuasion. The kid did however mention it was last MOT'ed in 1996…. So I'm really in a muddle about what to do. I'm going to offer him ?80 to take it away there and then. (luckily my friend drives a recovery truck for a living)

But I would really like the oppinions of people who have abit more knowlage of these types of jobs than I do. Don't get me wrong I'm a sound welder and mechanically minded. just wondering if it sounds like too much trouble.

Thanks steve.

Hi steve and welcome to the club  8)

sounds like you may have yourself a nice little find there.. there's quiet a few rust spots to be careful of if you can't weld yourself

Mainly…. Rear axle mounting points, these are quiet tricky to repair, also around the filler neck is a little awkward and front inner wings, although not a difficult repair, I found them to be a fair amount of work

I've only named a couple of rust area's to check, I'm sure a search will bring up the rest for you

good luck on the purchase and would like to see pics if/when you get it  :y:

If the mk1 is an E reg,it will be a south african import,or a mk2 golf?
i presume it is not a cabriolet?
vw stopped the mk1 on an A plate and a few scatterings of B plate exist.

I went round again today hoping he would let me try and turn her over but he said his brother hadn't been home yet and was expected back on thursday. However it seemed like him and his mother were eeger to see it go.  so if the moneys right I might just take it to break it.. if im unable to restore it.

I checked again tough if he had a log book and asked what reg it was and he said it's an A reg.

Back again sorry for the double post.

Just to let you know I had a GOOD look at the golf today and its a series 2 mark 1 A reg with a 1.1 polo engine. (ideal for me the younger driver)

I also called the owner today and had a good chat with him and made a solid offer of ?100 to ?120 depending on if the engine turned over when I wen't to view it next time (with a booster pack some WD 40 and some fresh unleaded for the carb)
The man that owns it said he will seriously concider my offer and find out if it's a fair one by the end of the week and let me know, if it's a fair offer he will let me take it away the same day if not he might wan't to haggle.

Heres what i've based my offer on

according to the buying guide

a late non GTI series 2 spec a should go for around ?50. this car is currently a non runner (but will run I have been assured) with SOUND body work it's last mot was 1996 and has been worked on slowly since 1987 (but has been started every 12 months since ownership) so I class this between catagory A and B with a small 1.1 engine and a fair amount of "maintinance" thrown in I decided to offer ?100 as my first bid. as a sweetner I said if it runs when I come to see it next I'll pay an extra ?20 in good faith.

Heres what the car needs

A new carb or a good rebuild.
Minor / medium body work (no surface rust of any kind some minor dents and scratches and one small hole in the rear n/s arch )
Minor engine rebuild (ie clean cylinder heads etc and a general service)
Full exhaust minus front pipe (replaced 12 months ago)
Structure and Subframe check (from what I can see the subframe looks sound, minus some surface blemishes (nothing serious tough)
possible new fuel tank / fuel lines (the car runs for 40 mins then cuts out sounds to me like the carb or a re-accuring blockage in the fuel system)
and ither a good tidy up on the offside wing or a new offside wing (it's had some minor repair work done to it that i'm not totally satisfied with so it might just be a re repair job)

heres the good things.

All new hubs, drums, shoes, pads and disks. (they just need a good cleaning) all new suspension, coils and covers.
It has had all new bushings fitted all over.
GTI interior (slightly.. the back seats are still standard.)
New bonnet
and a spanking new battery. (but it's flat)
4 new tyres all round.

So what do you all think?

Any Mk1 is probably worth ?100 for the parts alone…  :D
