Which fuel tank?

Post

Hi Guys,

Filled up with fuel yesterday & came back to a puddle under my golf so I need to buy a replacement tank. The question is as my golf has a mk3 polo 1.3 injection engine do I need to get the gti tank with the swirl pod in ?

I was looking at the one from vw heritage.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

can use a genuine gti tank if you can find one, pattern ones no good as they're all actually diesel ones with inferior swirl pots in.

alternatively normal mk1 carby tank and fit post-84 cabrio/scirocco injection or any g40 shape polo lifter pump and swirl pot. you may already have this stuff if a complete polo donor was sourced for your swap

Cheers for the reply Jonny,

Is it just the swirl pod thats the problem could you in theory replace the swirl pod with a better one if you wanted new metal or are they just generally bad quality?

I realise it may be way more expensive but I was just wondering. :)

the internal swirl pot isnt replacable unfortunately, too big to fit thru the hole in the top even if you could get one :(

on the genuine gti tank its a plastic pot with a filter inside and rubber flaps to stop the fuel escaping. on the diesel tank its just a crude metal cup. fine with thicker diesel oil and lower demand from the fuel pump but for a petrol one it will lead to fuel starvation when cornering and eventually it'll start to damage the fuel pump as they need a constant supply of fuel to lubricate the internals
