Fuel issue? Spluttering when accelerating (foot to floor) and engine hot

Post

Hey guys,

Ive got an '82 1.8 GTI cabriolet.
Had a bit of an issue today after the half way point on the drive out at the AGM. Car was still very hot! It started then cut out straight away. Turned over on next try but would not start. Finally it started from a bump start but was misfiring for first 20 seconds, then fine.
Got down the road and everytime I accelerated with foot to floor from 1st gear up to 3rd or 4th, it spluttered/misfired as though it was being starved of fuel? Or too much fuel? It wouldn't do it when I was in 5th gear, just mainly on high revs in lower gears.

Its been misfiring a lot recently for the first 20 seconds after being stood for a while when hot. But never when accelerating.

Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated guys!

thanks!

whats your history on the tank/filler neck? have they been changed, my first check would be cr*p in the tank personally mate, causing a starveation

Hey Brad,

I bought the car with a rusty neck, there was a lot of rust noticeable in the clear inline fuel filter. So changed the neck, emptied and cleaned the tank and changed both fuel filters. Ive since changed them another two times until now finally the fuel coming through is clean.
Ive only done about 400 miles since the change.
I do have the issue of when under half a tank of fuel and cornering it misfires then, but yesterday I had nearly a full tank of fuel.

do you think its worth lifting the inspection hole under the rear seats and checking the pickup for blockages again?

fuel pump will probably want replacing if its had all that junk thru it, they are pretty fine tolerances inside

check your swirl pot is ok and looks like the one in this here thread:
