Points to Electronic ignition

Post

What's involved / is it worth it?

Just querying whether this is worth doing and what's involved really!

I'm at a point where I could spend the money renewing my existing set-up or invest in a more updated system.

thoughts, comments and any how-to's appreciated :)

thanks!

unless you're having issues with it probably not worth messing about, what engine is it?

1.6gti :) Its a bit old now (parts of the ignition system), and I think I'm experiencing some sort of ignition issues. I've just got to fault find what the issue might be (if anything at all)

I did a bit of research and its got mixed reviews - mainly if it isn't broken don't fix it

if it was me, i would find a later 1.6 gti dizzy, then early type mk1 electronic ignition coil and any mk1/2 tci unit. plus the loom from mk1/2 carb/kjet 8v. main stumbling point is probably the dizzy, not to many about these days!

then you'll need to add a proper ignition live feed to the coil as it will have a resistor wire at the moment.

or there are various points conversion kits about the place, a fair few on here have used them with success :)

I changed my points to electronic using the Accuspark kit and I think it's worth it. The car has a smoother tickover, easier to start and a little more respostive but that could be down to better adjustment on the timing as I had a play with it after fitting the kit. I used to set my points with a dwell meter so they was spot on. Don't know if my MPG is improved as I don't bother how much petrol I use. (This is a claim from the Accuspark website)
