Mark 1 cabby manual roof to electric?

Post

Has any here done this?

Hello, I currently have a E reg mk1 gti cabriolet with a standard roof with the two release handles at the front. The roof seams like a lot of effort to put down. So was wondering how hard it is to convert this to a fully electric roof. It would be sooooooo nice to hit the button at the traffic lights and roof folds down, also my wife won't have her eyeballs popping out getting the thing down.

I have got hold of rams and pump looks like brackets are needed to be Welded  . And of course wiring loom switch .

Looked through posts but couldn't find any info.

thanks in advance

Not sure how hard it is but I've got an electric frame that had the rams removed to make it manual if you are interested? It has a blue vinyl hood and white inner, rear windscreen too.

sounds like your roof rams are weak or missing, either that or tyou have bent parts on the frame and/or siezed joints. it shouldn't be much effort to lift a hood when all is well, easily doable by yourself.

power roof isnt an easy job by any stretch of the imagination, for a start you need to chop the ram brackets out of a donor car and weld them into yours

Thanks for the reply John, I have looked between the roof lining and outer skin around the rear quarter area and can Not see any rams ! I'm guessing that's where they would be located?

This would explain why it's such bloody hard work

yeah if you open the roof go in the boot and unhook/peel the c pillars from under the parcel shelf, then close roof again and pull them out of the way. the rams should be between brackets bolted to the car and about mid way up the metal pillar behind the rear windows :)
