GTI ENGINE MODS ADVICE NEEDED !

Post

This is one for the tech guys/girls out there..
I have recently fitted my new engine in ( 1.8 8v gti) and need to start unleashing some power ! Just need some advice really about my planned mods to find out if they are all compatible..
My engine as it stands now :
Lightened and balanced crank
All new rings and bearings
Tsr style big valve head
Ported and polished
Piper 285 camshaft

At the moment it is still running the standard throttle body and injection system but I have or would like to fit the following:
Mk2 throttle body
Mk2 16v wur
1.6 gti metering head (have read that it flows better and my one is suspected to be duff lol )
K&n airfilter ( standard panel filter not induction box)

Would this combo be ok ? Sorry if this is a bit long winded haha. Thanks, jake.

This is the throttle body i plan to use. Could anybody tell me which vacuum outlet on the tb should be used for the 16v wur ? Also where can I get a fuel pressure gauge to test it all ?

Wur takes a feed from the servo pipe, one is genrally blanked off.

GTI ENGINE MODS ADVICE NEEDED !

Once you get it all together get it on a rolling road to check that she is not runing lean on the top end. You can perform the "WUR mod" to tweak the fueling to correct for this.

Cheers lhasadreams ! The 16v wur I have has already had the brass backing plate drilled out so I assume someone has tweaked it before. Not fitted any of this yet as im having idling issues now.
Getting tempted to go down the megasquirt route as ive had no end of trouble with the k-jet.
One minute its fine and then out of nowhere it just wont idle properly… the joys of classic cars eh ?
Mine has 16 previous owners, all of which have bodged everything !

That's always the problem with k-jet…when it's good it's good but when it's a nightmare reach for the 45's!

A stand alone ecu system based on later digifant hardware would work nice but not cheap.

This is the first time ive had to deal with k-jet so im on a learning curve to say the least ! The car is so much better than when I bought it. All the fuel pumps were on there way out, faulty relays and I doubt it had ever been serviced !
The only thing with twin webbers ect is that its hard to find a decent set and new ones are about as pricey as going down the megasquirt route. At least with megasquirt you get the mapping to really dial it in.
The car is booked in with my local tuning guru in a fortnight so I'll be chucking in a new clutch to handle the rolling road. He will be doing the wur as well as fine tuning the cam timing and overall fuel system.
I think the 1.6 metering head should work although the pipes for the fifth injector and wur are different ?

I know some say the 1.6 metering head runs richer but I've not found that to be the case when swapping from a 1.8 metering to a 1.6 and back again…that was on a race 1.8 engine making 150hp…in that particular case the 1.8 unit was better. I also run a std 1.8 metering head on one of mine…2ltr, ported head, 284 cam….no wur mod just the std 1.8 one…makes 150hp like that with no issues and isn't slow.

Yes good weber's arnt easy to find and not everyday road friendly…even the most enthusiastic owner will soon get fed up with the noise every day…B road blasts and track day's are a different matter!

I had another look at the 1.6 metering head today and I think that some of the pipes are looking knackered so I may as well stick with the 1.8 mh. Shame really as the mh it self looks to be in good condition.
I put the larger throttle body on today and its a lot more responsive. Just waiting for new airfilter and clutch then she's of to the rolling road !

Just been stalking on your website jmr (sorry I dont know your name ? ). Some very nice customer cars on there !! I also noticed a running theme with jenveys and emerald ecu's…
Do any of the ecu's alloy multiple maps to be switched without a laptop at hand ?
Thanks for your input once again !!

Stalk away Jake…lol…I'm Jason by the way.

Aw thanks!…they need updating badly as there's a lot more these days….180hp race mk1 1900 8v, 214hp 2ltr race mk1 8v crossflow, 230hp track day 2ltr mk1 16v, forrest rally 240hp mk2…etc.

The need for multiple maps is a bit of a myth with programable stand alone ecu''s…when mapped properly you get the best of full power performance at full throttle and part throttle economy when crusing…or at least you do when we map them. I've got a customer with an awesome road mk1 with an 1800 crossflow on throttle bodies that makes 160hp and pulls like a train on the road while giving decent economy on motorway runs.

We've used emerald in the past but get better results these days with DTA, MBE and Omex ecu''s as theyre more modern with faster processing power.

Anything I can help you with Jake just ask…I'm as happy to help as sell parts and build engine's so don't hesitate to call/txt or email me on any of the numbers on my website.

Jason

I feel I may be contacting you in the near future jason ! Already thinking about building a 2ltr lump as I have another mk1 golf with a empty engine bay ! Do you not rate megasquirt then ? The main megasquirt guy is not far from me but if others are faster/better then I may as well spend my money right first time round lol.
Cant see me moving away from mk1's anytime soon so im investing in the best I can as I go along.
Brakes is the next on the list as the standard stuff is a bit bum clenching at times… lol
Cheers for the advice jason !
