Hi guys,
Looking for some help here. I've just bought a 2.0 8v for my 1.1 golf and I'm collecting bits ready for the conversion. Here are the parts I have so far, and the parts I need to source. Please let me know what Im missing!
- Complete 2.0 8v Engine with mk1 GTI head and Kjet
- 5 speed Gearbox
- Gear linkage and gear stick
- drive shafts
- engine and gearbox mounts
- radiator
- exhaust manifold
Parts I need -
- GTI wiring loom
- GTI exhaust
- GTI fuel pump??
- Do I need a GTI fuel tank??
I will also be upgrading the brakes. But what am I missing here? Is there anything else I need to source?
Thanks!

if you run it on kjet you will need gti pump, accumulator and fuel lines. with the tank it would be easier for you to get a GTI tank but mkae sure its a proper one with the internal swirl pot and that it is in good nick there is a rubber seal on the swirl po t that can go and then it becomes useless!
the alternative is the post-84 cab/rocco or g40 shape polo lifter pump and fuel reservoir, but the trouble there is that the fuel reservoir goes where your accumulator wants to fit so can be tricky fitting it all in. the post-84 cab/rocco have a smaller accumulator which sits behind the tank, not sure how it will fit with an early type fuel tank?

have to watch out for aftermarket 'injection tanks' often what they actually are is diesel tanks with the primitive metal cup type pot which isnt suitable for a GTI

I cant say I'm afraid, they might be proper gti tanks or re-labled diesel tanks. cant really say without actually looking inside! if the seller can be bothered to take a picture of the swirl pot inside the tank for you then you would be able to tell

ok thanks mate, I'll have to message them or find a genuine good condition used one. Will I be able to see the rubber seal to see if its in good nick? i guess I'd just be looking to see if the rubber isn't cracked and looks in good condition?

Also is there a picture of what a GTI swirl pot looks like so I can match one up with it?

thats it, there should be a seal under it which prevents fuel running straight back out of the swirl pot, if degraded then i dont think it can be replaced

not easily need to have the tank in front of you and check it once you lift the filter pot out

After chatting with John about the gti fuel tanks and discovering I had the diesel design tank for my gti I can safely say any aftermarket "gti" tank you buy whether it be from ebay, vw heritage, crazy quiffs or A. nother then they will be the diesel swirl pot layout. There is only one aftermarket manufacturer readily available & that is the amusingingly named Klokkerholm.
All of the above suppliers recognised the fact they are not proper "Gti tanks" but they had also not had any negative feedback that these tanks are not suitable for the gti….
I have not yet fitted my 2.0 8v engine but when I do I will keep you posted to how the tank performs
Safest thing to do is have a genuine tank refurbed albeit not the cheapest…
Hope this info is of use
