The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

The other way to go is to fit an aftermarket system from the likes of Lumenition.

I didn't have the confidence at the time I needed to replace the points, so I bought a Lumenition kit. Wasn't too cheap (about ?125 in 1994), but it transformed the car's starting, running, fuel economy, and made it a bit nippier too (strong spark all the time, not just when the points were in adjustment).
If you're very lucky, you might find one in a breakers - you should be able to use one from any four-cylinder car, and if it's not a VW, you might need the mounting kit for the Golf (about ?15 in 1994, I remember).
From my memories of the car before and after the points, I can't recommend getting rid of them highly enough(!), especially if you do a lot of motorway miles (they wear quicker at high engine speeds).

You need to splice into the Mk1 loom at the point where it attaches to the coil (if you are careful you can do this by pushing the connector out of the old wining block and don't even have to cut anything). Mount the ignition amp somewhere out of the way and cable back to the battery. Couldn't be simpler.
