mk3 polo gearbox in 1300 mk1 golf

ive read that this is box is a straight swop for the 4 speed stard box, but my question is which gear linkage do you use and is there any modification you have to do thanks!!!

if your going to do this swap and its easy enough to do then i would advise to steer clear of the GT box as you will just end up changing gears all the time,

i did the swap on my Mk2 polo and although it would have been awesome on track for road use you get a bit sick of swapping gears

You don't need anything new in the linkage department but use the Polo ball and cage at the gearbox end. As said above, the GT box is great for B road thrashing, but a bit short geared for cruising. Go for the common 8P if you want to go places with a decent mpg figure. You will need a new gearbox mount fabricating though.

The mk3 Polo 1.3 is the easiest to find.

did your standard drive shafts fit this box or do you have to use the polo ones?

Bolts straight on. The Polo shafts are not interchangeable with the Golf ones.

easy swap as yeha has said. Did mine recently. other points to note.

Remove the plastic strips from you gear selector under the gaitor gives greater movment to find 5th easier.

I had to swap over the output drives on the gearboxes so they matched (not sure if this because mines a series 1).

fit a new gbox gear selector seal from gsf. cost 2 quid and alot easier to fit whilst off and they always leak.

made my mount of half polo half golf very easy and looks factory. Although looking at yeha hes used big block end so rubber easier to obtain?

just to resurrect this a bit as im thinking on doing the same swap soon so do i get it right that i use my complete gear linkage from my 1.3 and the mount is the only thing that is different that i need to fabricate.??

yes, since no small block 5 speed mount exists you have to make your own. common solution is to use box half of a 5 speed polo mount welded to chassis half of a MK1 mount :)
