edit my CL wont start now! fixed!

after watching me change the rocker gasget on my GTI all day yesterday. My CL has decided not to work.
turn the key and the dash lights come on and the relay clicks but thats it,no starter, no nothing.

Ive checked the battery which is fine.tried giving the starter a good whack and checked king lead from coil and connections to the starter.

The car has never done this before and normaly starts first time

thought volkswagens were supposed to be reliable :banghead:

Could be the starter gone, sometimes they just"go" I've had that once before.  Can you test if it has current going to it?

If it helps, i've just bought onr for my '93 cabby, havent a clue if they're the same???.  Wont have a chance to fit it for a couple weeks, so you could have it and sort me out next week.  I'll be in cford tonite btw.

As ew says probably a dead starter or a problem with the live feed to it. Sounds like the problem i had with my mk2 at the ipswich gig, although that appeared to be heat related. Have you tried jump starting it? Not sure if big block starters are interchangable with small blocks :dontknow:

Sorry I meant push/tow starting it, you need a functioning starter to jump start :banghead: . You can test the feed with a 12 volt bulb if you haven't got a voltmeter. Haynes manual explains how to do tests to determine whether feed or the motor is at fault.

check the earth lead from the battery to the gearbox/chassis. very common fault.

Does sound like a starter problem. If it is, It should start easily from a push start. (unless you've flooded it) I'd start by checking the fuse if you haven't already. you'll have 2 wires to the starter.

a thick cable straight from the battery +ve. This needs to be permanent 12v +ve

and a small wire that comes out the loom. this should go 12v +ve when you turn the key to crank position

The starter casing should have a good earth. it gets this from the thick cable from the -ve side of the battery, usually go's to the G-box or a starter bolt

havent been able to try push starting it as i havent got anyone nearby who can help (i dont want to give my next door neighbour the satisfaction of knowing the cars broken down!) thought id try the jump leads just to make sure it wasnt the battery

as far as i can see there is no fuse in the fuse box that directly relates to the ignition.as i said earlyer, the relay is clicking when i turn the key which would indicate thats working ok.Going to get the starter from my old CL and give that a go

thanks for all the advice

boogaloo,

Make sure you put the arthing strap back on the rocker cover and that you did not disurb any other wires.  the eathing strap usually goes on the rear passenger side corner rocker cover stud.

Nice one. Keep the dead starter motor. We'll have it apart, might be able to recon it.
