difference between a 1.1 and 1.3
i'm currently looking for either a 1.1 or a 1.3 - and was just wondering if there is a noticable differencein peformance between the two? just wondering as i am ideally looking for a 1.3 but have found a really clean 1.1 up for sale locally. Think it would be worth trying to find a 1.3?

If it was the choice between a clean 1100 and an average 1300, I'd have the 1100 everytime.
The 1100 was 55hp and 1300 60 :dontknow: It had a slightly higher gearing.
Apart from Drivers later 1300s were 5 door (CLs) and 1100s 3 drs (C). A good comprise if you could find a nice one would be a 1100 Formel E running on 98 octane. Nippy and high geared for Mways.

1.3 is noticably quicker unit. The 1093cc develops 50 bhp and 1272cc 60 bhp. 1.1 is a nice free reving little unit, but you need to work it a bit to keep up with modern traffic. The 1.3 is a bot more gutsy and has more low down torque and therefore a bit easier to cruise around in.
Performance -
1.1 = 0-60 in 17.1 sec, top speed 87 mph
1.3 = 0-60 in 15.0 sec, top speed 92 mph

Maybe down a hill, with a tail wind . Bear in mind VW probably measured those speeds with a device far more accurate than most speedos and that 'top speed' is probably the speed at max safe revs. At 100mph you be pulling around 6700rpm in a 1.1 with standard size wheels 8O .

1.1/1.3
As early 18 said I would go for the car with the best bodywork,If you started with a 1.1 you could always put a 1.3 in at a later date.There is a noticeable difference when you drive them.

1.1 and 1.3
Hi, I have a 1.1 with a webber carb, K+N and cold air feed and it's very nippy. I raced my friend in his 1.1 pug 206 and i was faster than him in a str8 line. We timed 0-60 in 13.8 secs. (Everyone on here might not believe me but it's true!. It does many mpg and is cheap to insure and tax. i got 95+mph out of mine on a motorway but slowed down as i thought it might do some damage since they are only tested at about 80mph lol. I've never driven a 1.3 so i cant offer my advise on that but i'm told they are nippy…
hope this help

Well I've got 105mph in my 1272cc Driver!!!!
It had a Weber carb and a standard drilled airbox, that thing was a rapid little motor!
Good times!

You WILL eventually get bored of the lack of poower and one day test drive a GTI then you WILL change!!! oh yes you will!!
The GTI has a very addictive allure, and then once you've changed there is no turning back!!!
I drove 1.3's when I got my 1st golf, then i got myself a GTI the rest is history
