Did my fuel pump just die?

Ok, I just bought myself a '82 Golf C. It ran pretty crappy but I was able to drive it home. I ran the engine a few times outside my house while trying to clean the carb and trying to get it to run better. But now it just won't start again…

But if I pour a little petrol in the carb it starts immediately for like one second but then dies again. Doesn't that mean that the engine is fine and I'm getting a good spark and the engine just isn't getting any gas?

Gas filter was FULL of rust and junk, fuel pump DEAD!

Think I'll need a need tank, pump, lines and filter…. :P

Think I'd replace it anyway, would'nt want to use the old junk with my newly rebuilt engine ;)

Ok, so I unplugged the line from the fuel tank and connected it to a 0,5l coke bottle and that works to get the engine going. BUT I can actually see the gas run down… VERY fast! I plugged the line going back to the fuel tank to another bottle and some of the gas goes back there…

But I have no idea where all that gas is going! Since the engine runs "fine" it can't be using all that gas, engine would just choke…

Nah not using it that fast the return pipe will be holding alot and putting it back in tank

The pipe can't really be holding a half a liter can it? I did this 2 or 3 times and each time it only returned like 1/5 of the gas to the return bottle.

And filler neck too  :D I thought it would be a mechanical fuel pump and they rarely just die  :dontknow:

Ok, I'm dumb :P

I have a mechanical pump and there is nothing wrong with it. Seems the filter was just clogged. But I don't know how I could have failed like this….
