knocking on full lock

Seem to have a clonking/knocking from the front of the car on full lock only, what would you say the most likely culprit? steering seems fine, drives straight and true.

CV joint? WHich full lock, left or right?

Yep I'll second that…. cv joint is most likely culprit. Failing that could be track rod end, shocker top mount or wear in the dampner.

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

Might be worth just checking these components are properly bolted up, too:

steering rack
calipers
wheels.

Full right lock, I take it its an MOT failure? if any of the above? dosent seem to affect handling at all, but maybe its always been at fault and not noticed, if i am fussy i would say it takes right hand turns better than left!!

I don't think it is (although I'm sure some others can advise accurately here), but a failed CV joint could be unsafe if it fails and locks one wheel. It might also destroy the transmission and the engine, in the process of failing, if at speed. At the very least you're going to lose drive, to the wheel(s).

If it only at full lock one way the outboard CV is the culprit, not nesseacrly a MOT failure but you should be contimplating changing it soon, mines the same just waiting till it warms up a bit, they cost around ?35.

Wheel bearings tend to whine at any steering wheel position, easy to check for, jack car up grab top and botom of wheel, if it waggles then its the wheel bearing. CV joint won't show on this test.

I think the best test for wheel bearings is to spin them. Jack up the car and spin the wheel. Check for a rumble in the bearing.

Rocking the wheel and discovering play could be several things eg worn top mount or wear in dampner.

Kins you can eliminate the above by getting your friendly helper to put a foot on the brake if if still moves then suspect the above. (Tip from my dad when i though my bearing was the problem, it turned out to be the steering knuckle!!)

Do i need the both sides if only one (top suspension mount) (d/side) looks dodgy or buy both sides, do i need just the top mounts or is a kit needed as per GSF, anyone know of anywhere cheaper? may also need a d/shaft, but d/side top mount is really bad

I would replace both to keep thing seven, not sure about kits, but theere must be a reason for them. all parts wear together :dontknow:

Yep with any suspension related part, if doing one side do the other too!

Agree, it probably would be best to do both top mounts at the same time but its not essential.

If you replace only one then you could find the other starts failing soon after and you'd then need to spend out to get camber and tracking done a second time.

The GSF kits contain the spacer that sits inside the bearing in the top mount. They also have new bumpstops and dust boots.

I think the mounts bought seperately are FEBI ones but I'm not sure. The kits are a different make and I've heard they dont last as long. The bumpstops in the kit look pretty cack compared to genuine items and I'm sure wouldn't last long.

Cheers,

Ross

I think I remember reading a thread about V.A.G top mounts and there being different types….. and something about throwing them through a dealers window. I'll try and find it.
