Gearbox linkage adjustmet

Hi all,
Along with the speaker change, I've finally decided that "Ciaran's Daily Crunch" is not the best way to start the day… (SWM7 know what I mean).
Any tips on gearbox linkage adjustmet?
Looks pretty easy according to Haynes, but doesn't everything?

Have you got a rebushing kit yet? If you get under the car you'll be able to feel where the play is in the linkage. You may need/want to change the selector rods too and maybe the relay lever (rubber ball on a stick!).

If its warn then you might not be able to adjust it to get it right.

The haynes tells you all you need to know to adjust it. Make soure your in neutral, undo the pinch bolt, remove the plastic cap from the bottom of the gear lever so you can see the bits to align and move the adjust away!

Its a messy job to clean it all up but very satisfying when you've got a perfect change afterwards.

This site has some excellent recommendations on how to check and rebuild shift linkages:

No problem!:D

Also, I changed the gear oil from typical 80W to Valvoline Synchromesh.  I don't know what the UK equilvalent for GM Synchromesh should be.

But the different in the gear grinding was truly stunning.8O
Here is the link to the synchromesh thread on Vortex.

I had a lot of trouble with getting 1st gear to load on cold mornings and even after the warm up, I would have a notchy feeling on 1st and 2nd.   Once I put 2L of synchromesh in (combined with the shift linkage bushing refresh), the transmission feels like I have a brand new car.    :dontknow:

Just rounded up photos of the bushing kit (blue things are for mounting emblems on the rear hatch and not part of kit :P )  Probably one of the best "satisfaction-per-dollar" purchases I have made so far on this car.

This is the upper relay bushing from my car - lots of play and clinking noise.  And it had fallen down the shaft and was completely useless.

I did my linkage about 18 months ago but recently the gear change has become notchy again. The change feels rough as though the actual cogs aren't going into place properly, could this mean that the gearbox needs re-conning??

I've never had to replace the gearstick 'ball'. Always had success with replacing P/Ns 5,35,18. These come in the GFS kit. Some people also change P/Ns 33 and 36. If the rubber ball on 12 has worn 'square' also replace this. Makes a world of difference.

The EKTA pic is from a MKII? The rubber boot under the gear stick is different on a MK1. These are always ripped and need replacing.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

The gearstick 'ball' (bearing lever plate) can make a big difference - did on mine.

Might as well change but make sure you get a new circlip for the gear stick which holds the spring in place - only pence and you can guarantee the old one will stretch.

Also do the relay lever - metal piece with a rubber ball on the end

I had the garage fit pieces 33 and 36 yesterday… the selector rods. The plastic end clips had broken and were allowing play in the system. When I got it back the 'gate' seems to have moved over quite a lot then before.

I understand that things will feel different for a while as my normal 'throw' will have changed a bit but the actual selection is quite difficult. When I select 1st I engage reverse and when going up to 5th, 3rd is found. Is it me not being used to new feel or should more adjustment be made by the garage.

Thanks, Dan

Dan they have not adjusted it correctly get them to set the linkage again using the 19mm rule [in haynes manual] under the car . If you can't find the 'how to' i will scan it tonight and post on here .

Thanks… I didn't think that it had been done properly but its hard to argue when they are the 'professionals'.

I have the brown haynes book, pages141 to 143 seem to cover some of it but your scan may help. Thanks Nigel.

Print this and give it to your mechanic .  :) Its the 19mm part , page 2 thats important , if this is out you will select reverse instead of first and not get 5th or even 4th .
