Gearbox dumped oil on the road

smell the oil - gearbox oil is un mistakeable!

Can you see where it is dripping from?

Lol, ive lost my sense of smell at the mo after an operation so had to get a house mate to sniff my oil  

Seems to be engine oil tho, and i think i located the leak to the oil filter head, think its just the little seal in there.

Yeah - there is an O ring bewtten the filler head and block

Ok - finally got round to taking my box out and found this:

….good old gear box diff pin failure! There will probally be a big hole on the underside of the box to!

Do a search on the ClubGTI forum… there are a few that have done this.

The rivets holding the differential in to the gear ring(I think) are prone to failure around 150k miles. VW do a replacement bolt set to rectify it. It does mean stripping your gear box though to repair before failure.

I had one go while travelling along the A11 from Norwich to Wymondham about 2 years ago. was sitting at about 70>75mph in a queue of traffic, there was a knock and then I could see nothing behind me! All the cars behind will have had about 2 litres of gear oil pumped out and atomised over them!…. 8O .

I swapped the gear box for a replacement one, the broken one was well and truely mullered. On the pluss side it did save me waxoiling the underside of the car.
