Owned for five years, been off the road for four

Morning all. Been a member on here since I bought my golf and finally thought I would start of thread for some help and advice. Bought my MK1 golf around five years ago. Lovely car when I bought it and ran well for about a year. During the winter things started to take a turn for the worst with some dodgy electrics, some rust bubbling through the bodywork and the engine playing buggary. It came off the road for some much needed love and over the next two years I played around with it until buying a house put it on the back burner. Since then it's been sat covered in the car port and now I think it's about time I pull my finger out and try to teach myself a decent bit of knowledge a out it mechanically. DSC_0056.JPG

It's currently fitted with what I believe is a 1.8 gx ? Engine which originally had a pierburg carb which I have replaced with a webber. Not a particularly clean install and some choice mods including a hell of a lot of silicon in and around the cylinder head and some very dodgy electrical repairs. The gentleman that I bought it off was adamant of owning his own vag specialist shop but that's another story for another time. It had a MK2 dash and wiring loom fitted when I got it so that was one of the first things to come out and be replaced with an original MK1 series two dash and wiring loom IMG_20150528_181731.jpg IMG-20150617-WA0003.jpg
I still need a few interior bits to finish it off and clean it up nicely. Need to figure out how to replace the bulbs in the clocks as they have never worked. Before buying the house I started collecting a decent amount of nice parts for it including a nice set of BBS rs IMG_20150922_102457.jpg

I've also got an original autoplas rear window Louvre that I dug out of a loft in Tottenham and a lower rear hatch BBS spoiler that I'm not using for it anymore. The BBS are 15x7.5 I think with a convex face. All brand new hardware and new polished hex nuts. I have a few sets of clean original centre caps for them aswell. A few other parts including some louvred windscreen wiper brackets and yellow tinted headlight bulb covers. The rear arches were rolled by the previous owner and the car repainted in jaguar/land rover Roman bronze. As it stands it's been roughly four years off the road, the engine once started runs like a bag of nails, I presume the timing needs setting and the carb needs tuning. Also presume the brakes and wheel bearings will need maintenance/ replacing, finding out why the horn doesn't work. A rust bubble on the left corner of the tailgate fixing and a few other odds and ends.

Cheers mate. Helped will be needed. Original plan was to abf on carbs or g60 it but due to real life and being an adult Im just planning to get the current engine running nice and reliably so I can actually use it.

Basically before diving into the car. Since this, a mortgage, an apprenticeship, five other daily cars and three foster dogs with one failed foster that led to adoption have taken priority so now it's been about time I thought I should get it sorted, limited budget of course 😂

Oh dear mate sounds busy. I've got 4 kids myself so budget and time are against me too. Mines 1.8 with twin choke Weber 32/34dtml and it runs great I've got to say .stainless steel manifold helps with low down power

Good to know. I couldn't tell you what Weber I fitted. Was almost five years ago. Stainless steel manifold is in the plans aswell. Would this engine benefit from a set of twin carbs of the Mani at all ?

I suppose it depends what your after mate really I'd have gone twin webber's 1 per cylinder if I could afford it. but I couldn't. Saying that the Weber I fitted was brand new and is like night and day compared to the pierburg that came with it from the factory .mine showed 102.9 bhp on the rolling road .not bad for a 29 year old car that had 98bhp straight from the factory
