My 83 Gti set to get full restoration

Straight £1000 for the engine work :o  Not sure if that's a lot but it's quite a bit of work inc. new pistons etc

Yeah painters don't ever seem to be in a hurry   tbh it's probably better that way in the long run.

Bad news today engine wise. Basically the engine I bought is FUBAR'D When I dismantled it I could only find 3 thrust washers, seems the one I couldn't find has been ground into the block and the crankshaft at the same time. Now on the lookout for another AGU bottom end :P  :P

1 step forward, 2 steps back :|

Feel for you Andy, terrible news :o

That said, you were going to pay a grand sorting this engine, can you not get a top notch second hand engine for less now?

Cheers lads, managed to find a bare AGU engine locally, gonna get it over the weekend and drop it off at the machine shop next week. Seeing as he's already bought in the oversized pistons etc, I'm just gonna get the same job done, all it means is that I've had to fork out for a new engine.

It'll all work out in the end

Hi all, bit of an update

After the fiasco I had with the first 20V T I bought I managed to get another locally which has now been re-bored, new pistons etc etc. I am now going to attempt to rebuild it, never done this job before so any help would be great. Straight away I have some questions as I really want to get this right first time

Now here's the questions lol. I have a haynes manual which tells me to turn the crank until all the pistons are half way in the bore, to stop any chance of the pistons hitting the valves. I did this. It then tells me to fit the head and put the head bolts in in sequence but only hand tight, then go through the tightening stages. Before I do this, I need to know how to put the bottom end back in TDC, the haynes fails to tell me this. At the minute my head is on with the head bolts finger tight.

Pics

I've also had some news from the paint shop, apparently I have fitted the N/S sill in correctly and it needs approx 10mm of filler to fix it, which to me is no good, so he is going to have a new sill fitted, just means there's a slight delay, not too worried though, I'd rather it was done right!

I might be wrong mate but when we put my engine back together my old man put the bottom end to TDC before putting the head on, i might be wrong but im sure if i remember right thats wat he did, so have the given u a completion date on ur paint then mate?

I think you are right, that's why I'm asking mate. Unless there is  a way to put it back in tdc whilst the head is on.

I've been looking online for a tutorial but can't find one, thought there might be one on YouTube. Might be a good idea for someone to do do 'how to' at some point?
