New Member - Hello Everyone!!

Hi Everyone, First post- i've just joined this place!!
:D  :D  I have recently become interested in Volkswagen cars and I'm thinking about buying a Mk1 Golf in the next few months, depending on insurance costs and which model i should start out with.

I'm 20 and have been driving for three years ,but rest asured im not into aircraft wing spoilers and chinese graphics and the like. I currently share a Peugeot 205 with other family members and so my interest in 70s/80s hatchbacks like the golf, came from there.

Although I'm not a mechanic,i'm willing to crack open a haynes manual any day and get have a go if it means that the car will benefit!

I think the golf would be a most suitable car for me, as i believe that simple design and mechanicals are much better than piles of expensive computer controled systems and easier to fix when (if) they break down!

Any suggestions on which model to choose? - I'm quite intregued in the diesel models, but not sure about parts availibilty.:dontknow:

Many thanks!!!

Jamie :D  :D

Welcome aboard Jamie. This is a good site for advice on anything MK1 related. I've been driving Veedubs for 20yrs now and still can't get the MK1 out my system. You'll find this forum useful and the people on here will help you decide which model to go for. At 20yrs old (blimey…I was driving my first MK1 the year you were born )   :(  I guess insurance quotes may also help you decide 8O

welcome Jamie,

think you'll be very impressed with whatever Mk1 you decide to go for, be it 5-door or 3… I got my first Mk1 only 2 years ago as a complete restoration job (even though I'd never driven ANY Volkswagon before) and to say the 12 months of grinding, welding, spraying and shouting alot was worth the grin factor of driving one is an understatement.. I've had quiet a few hatchbacks and this is the best by far!

they are mechanically quiet simple although some jobs are difficult only because of they're location, the GTI (if you can afford insurance) can have a few fueling issues with the bosch k-jetronic injection system (leaking injectors, rusted filler necks etc..), not had a smaller engine or diesel Mk1 so couldn't say much about them but there's enough people here with them

the main thing to look out for when buying is rust! there's quiet a few posts on the areas they rust (check the restoration area for places alot of us have had to repair) and there's a good buyers guide

good luck on your Mk1 search and hope you get a good one  :y:

Cheers for the info DubPartz and Phil!!

I managed to get a few quotes around ?400-450ish fully comp (Norwich union) which is about the same for the diesel and any of the non Gti models, which isn't too bad! I'd probably have to sort out a classic insurance policy if i was to purchase the Gti, still in the early stages of researching this anyway!

I'll have a look around at the guides and peoples restorations so i can get a feel for what its like to work on these cars.
Cheers once again for the great welcome to this place, hope i can join you in owning one of these great classics soon!

Hi Jamie and welcome, FYI you normally wont get a true classic policy with agreed mileage/value until you a 25+ but not to worry, if you can't stretch to Gti insurance, other MK1's are just as much fun.

When I was 19 (a few years ago!!) I had a 1.5GL - was still a cracking drive and quite nippy too. You tend to find these non-gti models often go for low prices and you'll often find low owner cars.

Check for sale section now, Drew posted yesterday about someones silver MK1 GX which had been in the family since new. Can't recall the price but looked very tidy and worth a look.

Good luck and keep us posted what you do!

Cheers
Andy

JamieG,

Where abouts in the country are you? There should be a local meet near you somewhere in the country if thats your thing.

However you really do need to be in the North West to join the Real Massive Members. If you are a North Westerner then pop along to the Wiggin Tree ph (full details in the Regional Meets section) and you'll have a good deal to look at!!

Welcome, Dan

Hi there again everyone, thanks for all the replies!! :D
Had a look at the Gx model in the link, looks very good condition and i like the colour! I guess it just sneaks into the cheap tax band also with a 1457cc engine!

I'm down in a deep dark corner of the south west at the moment so a little distance from the big north west meet, however there is always the possibility of a road-trip if i go down the Mk1 route

I'll have a look at the regional meets section, and keep you posted as to what i end up doing!

Cheers, Jamie :D

Checked out the SW meet, 15 cars! pretty good, it'll be one in the not too distant future hopefully!
I live near Bude on N.cornwall coast when im not studying in Plymouth.
The Taunton meet sounds ideal, wouldn't take long to get there.
There's also Run To The Sun - although i remember last time someone dubbed it 'Too many novas' !!
