Settling In
I picked up a campaign at the end of the summer and I've been investing time and money into it since, getting it road worthy and not driving like a bag of bolts. So I've had the steering rack replaced as it was apparently about to fall apart. Timing belt done. The usual fun with the gear linkage. Oh look, no first gear, a couple of garages didn't have a clue, gave me first but lost second fourth etc etc until I finally found a guy over in Essex (Nige at Precious Metals) who knew what he was doing. I've replaced the headlights which I was very proud of as I didn't c*ck it up, so I can actually see slightly better than having no headlights. I'm having real fun hunting down a stock badged GTI quad grill with red surround and an original campaign steering wheel. I'm going to push the button on new coilovers as the current suspension's rather painful. The body work's not bad, it came with the full wing and side winglets which I wasn't a fan of. The wing itself was easy to remove but the winglets were screwed into the body work.. why dear god people, why. It's ben resprayed in the last 5 years but wasn't a great job, so the roof sills are cracked and oh yes, the front wind deflectors, they seemed to have been fitted under the windscreen seal so water has run down and blow the paint near the bonnet, leading to water in the footwell. So I'm looking at getting the body done in spring, back to primer, sort out all the nasties. Interior's pretty good, a bit of sagging in the driver's seat. I'm considering replacing the seats with something more supportive as my back would appreciate it. Either TT or cayman seats. Looks like the wiper motor's already been upgraded and the entire car's been polybushed. Oh, I think my driver side lock's about to go and the bearing in the heater fan is definitely about to die. Loving my money pit and the way I look at it, I'm investing to keep a bit of history on the road. Long live MK1s

Give Mark at Classic-VW a shout funk-star - I'm sure he can help you with the grill and bits.
Don't be tempted with cheap coilies though, you'll be finding that painful too!

Here are some further pics, I just had it cleaned. The most pressing issue I have right now is the leak in the windscreen, drivers side at the bottom. I think Im going to have to get it pulled out and sealed up properly during the non stop rain as my footwell's always damp. Someone else recommended I cover the spot in vaseline as a temporary measure.
The shot of the back quarter shows where the side of the wing was screwed into the bodywork and there's the obligatory shot of my dirty engine bay, I can guess at a few of the mods done here.
Coilovers go on next month and I'm selling a kidney to get the body work tidied up and resprayed in the spring when. I'll get the original decals back on and get it rebadged which is my preference. Quite liking the look of ATS cups to replace the wheels. Needs and wants.

What is all that vacuum piping for - the one that you can see near the coolant tank and going all the way to the inlet manifold with a T-piece half way along?

The brakes had been upgraded and I read something in the docs that came with the car about a vacuum chamber, could it be related to that?
