Hi everyone! Ive just bought my 1st Golf :)
Hi! Just picked up my first Golf yeasterday and found this site while searching for parts on google. Its an early small rear light model. I got it reasonably cheap and thought it would be a good project to restore over the next 6 months ready to take to a few meets and shows. Unfortunatly it needs a little work ie a bit of welding to one of the sills, a brake overhaul, some engine work and the paint work sorting out cos its shocking (looks like its been resprayed with a can!
).
Hopefully you guys and girls can help me a bit along the way with getting the old girl back on the road, cos although ive had a few VWs before they have all been Polos and im still learning about mk1 Golfs!
Anyway hers a pic of how the car is now:
Cheers, Tom

Welcome m8 looks like your gonna be busy
not much different to the polos lots of interchangeable parts and same sort of followers.
Not one to put dampers on things but have you looked at the inner front wings yet ?
Start there and the rest should be happy days plus you got instant street cred good luck m8.

Nice car to start with - small rear light one
Check out Gregs log on his MK1 driver - esp. the before and after shorts of the paint job. Although I dont think his was a bad respray, just a faded original, it just shows what can be done with a lot of elbow grease!
Gregs log!
Good luck and keep us posted with pics!

Cheers guys
. Had a look at gregs log which is very good and a great help!
I did question the seller on this as the front wings were only replaced about 18 months ago, and he said the inner wings were in suprisinly good condition so he didnt have to do any work on them. Wether or not this is still the case i dont know!? Im going to have a look on saturday when im off of work.
Any idea how long it takes to take the front wings off and is it fairly straight forward?
Cheers, Tom

takes about 10 - 15 mins to remove wings all you need is a 10mm spanner and socket and philips head screw driver not get a haynes manual or bently good for basic stuff

welcome
welcome to the dub world!! yer mate my cars exactley the same as yours i think, battle ship grey/blue, mine looked well shabby so got some rubbing compound, did the whole car, then used wax and polished it up, looks like its just rolled out of the factory, although the contrast of some rust does lower the overall result!! bust butsing, 1.99 form your local pratical motorists, this stuff is a god send!!

Welcome to the club. I remember seeing the car for sale. Am I right in saying it's a 1588cc diesel? Are you keeping the engine as it is? Mine came back from the dead bodywork wise and hadn't been run for ages, but the engine was always too good to scrap. Once I was using it regularly it just got better and better and now feels superb when it's warmed up - so give her a chance if she runs a bit rough for a while! The only down side is the 4 speed models can be a bit disappointing if you get on the open roads a lot! If you can get a five speed box fitted it'll be worth it's weight in gold. Bert's the expert on that one. If you need instructions for any job I've got the diesel Haynes manual - just let me know! Good luck! Hopefully when it's done you can make it to the North West club meet? There's pics of the last meet in the 'regional meets and shows' section. I drove out from near Scarborough so there's no excuses!
