Hello from the South

Well after finishing my MK II Gti I decided to take the plunge and get a MK I GTI. After seeing a vast number of rotten cars I have closed a deal on a former track car. Needs some minor bodywork but is a solid shell.

The plan is to tidy her up and put all the trim etc back together (currenty in the boot) Then do an engine conversion of some desciption. Now this is going to be huge challenge as my mechanical skills are limited, but as they say you live and learn. Any tips on the most cost effective conversion etc hugely welcomed.

Welcome to the site Quiksilver.

What year is your mk1 - has it been modified for the track? Look forward to seeing some pictures.

Cheers

Well the car is a Y reg 82/83 Mars Red not sure which as I only just go things sorted this weekend and the logbook is on it's way.

It was modified for the track it was running twin webbers, some sort of race cam, spax suspension, Jan Speed exhaust.

It's basically a solid shell, need a bit of minor bodywork, ding in wing should dolly out, and respray in time. I will post some pics when I get it trailered back. 95% of the trim is their comes on P slots, one centre cap missing.

Any tips on the most cost effectice engine converstion? thinking 2l 9a or 1.8 16v lump out a Mk II.
