It was the gearbox I was concerned about as I thought 1800s had a five speed box?

is your starter at the front or the rear of the block on the 1.6?

I'm surprised the Cabrio has a 4 speeder to start with? Would have thought all UK cars were 5? Perhaps Dubboy knows for sure?

yeah all 1.5-1.8 MK1/2/Scirocco blocks are same fitment, just change clutch for a manual type and away you go. only thing is knowing what clutch last person used, you have 190, 200 and 210mm sizes and flywheels different on them.
to be on the safe side I'd fit 1.8 8v 210mm clutch and find a 210mm flywheel from 1.8 MK1/2/Scirocco

Engines in!!
It dropped straight in had to swap flywheels and manifold,it's running fine it's a good engine quiet and smoothe no rattles or knocks or smoke.it cuts out on tickover I haven't had chance to get an air filter it's running with the empty airbox don't know if this could be the cause? It's a bit lumpy ticking over so needs a tune aswell I think… This is my first engine swap so any advice would be good

it should idle fine with no filter, just a case of getting base idle & co adjusted I recon. did you swap the carby over from the 1.8 or are you using the old 1.6 one?

Using the 1.8 carb but had to adapt throttle cable to fit,it's sticking a bit but seems to be freeing up more as I use it

Where the throttle cable meets the carb that mechanism was sticking and not going all the way back so was ticking over at 2500 revs but now alternates between 1100 and 2000 revs so I think it's just a bit stiff from non use,the connector on the throttle cable was different so I snipped the end off and crimped and screwed on the correct sort will this suffice or do I need a different sort ie 1800 cable? Thanks for all your advice you're a great help

might need some tweaks to the carb as its designed for auto box, are a few differences on em but cant recall what off hand. might be wrong but I think it has some kind of control relay for the idle?
as long as the cable works its no big deal, to do it factory you would have to swap all throttle linkage for a manual one then fit a manual cable

Aah I think I'll leave it as it is it seems ok,as far as setting up the co and idle etc is that best done by a pro? Think duelling mite be off as I can hear little bangs from exhaust, not loud just like a 'Duff'every few secs.there's a garage called protec by me who specialise in old vw's I duno wether it mite be worth paying them an hours labour and letting them go over it and set it up as I'm not very clued up

you can get co meters, but prob cost you just as much as a quick tuneup. might even be able to get it done as craft back pocket prices if they dont put it on their books
