Which gearbox??
Hi
Im collecting parts to change my mk1 to a 16v and was wandering what gearbox to use, i know the mk2 16v is the obvious choice or the abf 16v one but what else can i use
Ive heard the gearbox from a mk3 TDI is a good combo??
Any suggestions
Thanks Alan

You got it first time, the 16v box is the best option. I think tdi box would be totally unsuitable.

Can't see why everyone digs the 16V box - 8V box is just the same ratios (in fact, 5th is a little higher) and saves you the hassle of upgrading the driveshafts to 100mm inner CVJs. If the gearbox and CVJs are in good condition, they can easy handle the power.
You'll need to retain your 8V friction disc in the clutch, though.

I thought the 16v box is stronger in the splined area where the clutch plate sits, which is why clutch plates dont swap over.

Well, I asked this question to BrokeVW (gearbox specialist in USA) and he's never ever seen an input shaft snapped! So 22mm is fine. I don't know why VW chose to change it to 24mm for the 16V box.

So either the 8v or the 16v will do. great thanks

You can - I made a mistake! You use a 16V pressure plate and 8V friction disc. The 16V pressure plate is stronger, but otherwise its the same size and bolts onto the crank in the same way.

Here my 2p for what its worth.
From what ive read the general feeling on the Abf Box is that the flywheel is far too heavy and over engineered for the Abf and can be helped a little by getting abit skimmed off it (lightened).
I think this is due to it being the same box as used in the Vr6,i guess theres a fair bit of extra torque and wieght to deal with in a Vr![:)](https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/themes/default/images/ocf_emoticons/smile.png)
.
I think the Abf boxes are popular with the 20vt guys.
Someone will most likely say if i'm wrong here

Harvey, Quaife do a 6 speed conversion kit for the 020 box, but it ain't cheap!! Not sure whether it has a lsd including in the kit but it'd be worth fitting as well if you go down that route.
See http://www.quaife.co.uk/VW_2 for all their goodies!!
I also thought I saw a group buy on CGTI, but not sure?

I think they are around 28-30 lbs 8O
Will get mine lightened when i stick the Abf in the Mk1.
I just brought a complete unit to stick in my Mk3 Cab for the time being so i've been looking into possible pro's and cons between different boxes and heads

Hi
I cannot really stretch to the expense of the quaife box although I would love to. So really need to find a cheapish solution, 16v gearboxes are getting hard to find and mst people selling them know this and boost the price to suit, looks like Ill be going down the 8v route
