what engine to use?
i am undecided on this one, i like the idea of keeping it retro with 2.0 16v on carbs, or the sound from the vr6 but i think this option would be a bit front heavy? or spend some money and do the 1.8t route. i would like some feedback on this from people who have already done or have more knowledge on this than me. thanks

Firstly, how much money have you got? Secondly, are you able to do most/all the work yourself, or are you getting a garage involved? And what's the intended final use of the car, etc.

paul_c, i will be doing the work myself, just need to sell my other car then i should have a good amount of money for this project. its just for pleasure use but im used to a pretty quick car to drive so i want something to give me as much fun, and a nice amount of grunt.

I don't think you'd do a VR6 conversion with ?3000. However, a 20vT conversion would be well feasible, since you're doing the work yourself. G60 might be ?1500-2000, 2.0 16V ?1000-?1500.

20vt will be ?2500 ish but thats hunting around for cheap bits
you can get 20v lumps for ?500 now so could do it alot cheaper i guess

My prices assumed just the engine, not the car too. Why don't you wait and seek out a car which has already had an engine conversion, they do occasionally come up for sale?

I don't think you have enough money to take on a VR6 or 20vT conversion, with ?3000 including the car. 2.0l 16V is do-able though, and correctly set up, can offer a lot (ie more than you'd ever need in day-to-day use) of usable performance.

this is the key factor, for me, when budgeting conversions.

i think i am going to go with 2.0 16v on carbs, fits in with the retro look, will sounds amazing! and prob just the right amount of power for a front wheel drive car. thanks guys
