weight saving - which bits to go in what order

for my trackday car Im pretty much sussed on the engine front (just a big valve modded head left really to do..) so im not looking at reducing the wieght, Ive done the easy bits with race seats, harnesses, no rear seats and now the bumpers have come off too, Ive even removed the rear wiper and mech to save a couple of kilo!

but what should be next to go for grams per bucks as it were, im thinking the bonnet for a CF one, but Im to find out exactly how much this will save me, then poss polly carb side and rear windows?

any other ideas? ovbouly the lower the cost the better (and yes i know i should go on a diet but at less than 80kg im not exactly massive!)

Id have thought wings/ Bonnet/ Boot lid/ Doors and glass are good options. Not sure how much bonnet and boot cost but i just saw some wings on ebay for ?120 if i remember correctly, which were fibreglass ones  :)

Does it have to be road legal?

Replacing panels really will not save that much weight and compromises your safety if hitting the armco at speed(trust me I have found out the hard way)have you been through the interior removing ,carpet, sound deadening, heater box ,heater blower, rear washer bottle and bracket, strip out dash as much as possible, undertrays, glove box, ashtray, heater controls etc bonnet catch, bonnet hinges(Replace with bonnet pins),replace battery with lightweight version and relocate it to the boot, tailgate lock and catch, (Replace with bonnet pins),remove all underseal, changing windows is expensive and will only save a few pounds , :D  :D

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

aye it needs to be road legal, as ill be using it in the summer to go chav hunting too,

Ive been through the inside taking bits out, i still have part of the dash to take out and the front carpets (sound deadenings gone but it left lots of fluffy poo so i put the carpet back for now,) ive left the heater in as its a extra bit of coolant) Ill keep butchering it.

I would have thought the windows would ahve saved a bit, but its interesting to hear its not as much as i thought..

under the carpet is the sound insulation foam take that out aswell as the stuck on sound deadening stuff that will be extremly hard to get of youll need a hot air gun and a scraper you should save a fair bit here.

i always have the last laugh ;)

Fibre glass panels, (bonnet, front wings and boot), polycarbonate windows, cut out the spare wheel well and fix a sheet of ali over the hole.
You can save quite a lot of weight if you choose the right wheels too, what size do you run?

The glass is surprisingly heavy, especially the big bit in the tailgate.

External mirrors can come off too, tape over the holes to preserve the aerodynamics. In fact, tape all the panel gaps except the driver's door too.

You seem to have a pretty complete list before you're into replacing rather essential items with lighter race versions. You could lose the exhaust middle box and replace with a straight through pipe, bound to be a few kgs there. Also I'd back up the point re: wheels, not all alloys are the same, there's light and heavy ones out there.

Other ideas:

lighter fuel tank
Drilling non-stressed areas of the bodywork
Removing excess wiring and grommets for items no longer needed (stereo, rear speakers, rear wiper, heated rear window)
Removing the underseal from the underside and wheelarches
Lighter alternator and starter motor

if the car goes to light you might turn it over on a track and if u hit some think and you have rebuild the front end out of fibreglass its wont be pretty ?
i think you can get lid things like the heat to blower etc but when it come to safty id stay with the original parts the mk1 on light any way ?

i take it you want a roll cage as well

The door cards are going all together more than likley, there is a rear cage in the car, the radio etc has been dumped already.

the sound deadening was the first thing to go.

The wheel i run are 14" ats cups for the track and when the weathers better ill have my 15" ronal turbos on for the road.

Lightweight flywheel will improve acceleration by its reduced mass and the energy needed to spin it up.
Could easily equate to a 100 pound drop in vehicle weight in 1st and 2nd gear.

Dump your lunch, that'll save a few pounds.

Wear socks not trainers, Y front not boxers, hope you've not got gold fillings as these may have to go too (every little helps).
