err…. its only 1100cc. Theres hardly any performance bits available for the small block engines. Even if you could get 'a lot more power' say 20% its only another 10bhp which is still be less than a standard big block engined Golf produces. And it will cost a bomb to get that extra power. If you are doing it for insurance reasons your insurance company will charge you more for a modified 1100 than a standard GL etc. Sorry. Keep it as a standard 1100 there are hardly any left.

You can replace it with a bigger small-block engine if you want - a 1300cc will go straight in, as will the Polo G40 engine.
There's a good thread in the Engines FAQ section which covers upgrading 1100cc engines

As said not much point trying to tune a 1.1, best to stick a 1.3 Polo GT engine in if you want more power. You can upgrade the front brakes, mk1 GTI pads and vented discs is a common option. You can also easily upgrade the suspension by fitting anti roll bars and sports shocks/springs.

Al third that, youll get nothing more out of a 1.1.
Try a MK2 1.3 with a cam and a few bits and bobs and you'll notice a big difference.
If you stick with the 1.1 engine then and exhaust wont give you anything other than a nice sound.
Suspension you could upgrade maybe a GTI set up or after market. Ebay or forums for sale sections would be good for 2nd hand parts. PS (ive got a set of coilovers for sale for a mk1)
Brakes, again maybe a gti set up with rear disk conversions is a good choice without spending too much money.

up grade to a 1.3 then turbo it
look out for a 5 gt turbo or uno turbo and have a few bits off that
the manifold will be a pita but I still reckon you could do a ghetto scrappy DIY turbo conversion fairly easily 8)

alright mate
i have looked in to this aswell cos i got board of my 1.1. i would put the polo gt engine in and run it on a carb or two, keep the standard 1.1 gearbox(for ease). convert the brakes to gti brakes and put fast road pads in. for the suspension if u dont want to spend alot of money get the uprated suspension from gsf, only costs ?150 but mine handled mint the back end just gripped, before i did this it would slide for fun. for the exhaust go to powerflow ad get one made.
i also looked into the turbo conversion but there is not much point. cos u need quite alot of bits and it gets expensive. u could sece some money buy not havin a intercooler but carnt run alot of power. but that deffeats the object of it cos it will give u little power gain unless you are prepaird to rebuild the engine but will also add alot more weight
sorry if i sound offputtin about the turbo after all they are cool untill i realised how much it would cost.

The Polo 1.3GT is a conversion. I've just done it to my 1.1 its much better than before. I used: 3F Polo GT Engine, got the head skimmed 5thou, Shrick 252 inlet 276 exhaust camshaft, running on Dellorto Twin 40s and VW MotorSport inlet manifold. Only things I had to do were, put an inline Facet fuel pump, and fuel pressure regulator, and modify the gearbox mount (I used the Polo GT 5 speed box). Everything else pretty much lines up.
There are too many online users to list.
