Mark3 2lt Engine conversion into Mark 1 golf cab

Hi

Am thinkg of doing some sort of engine conversion, from my very tired 1800 carb engine. Have been toying with the idea of a mark 3 2.0ltr engine and was wandering if any1 new how easy this conversion was and if i could use my same gearbox running gear etc. I also read somewhere that i could just get the bottam end of a mark 3 then just use a mk2 head is this correct. Any help with this would be appreciated and also any help with sourcing one would be apreciated aswell

Thanks Kenno

hi loads of info on this site about this, just do a serch, but basicly, use the bottom end of a mk3 gti or audi or seat, with ur head, also as ur's is a carb fit a 1.8 gti cam, make sure if ur head is solid lifters us a gti cam from a solid lifter head, or if hydrolic tappets get a gti cam from a hydrolic tappet car, should be cheap and loads of power, clutch and gear box will fit, however budget for a new clutch, only a fool fits a new engine and leaves the clutch alone!!

thanks for the reply mate, i will do a search, so basically i need to be searching for a mark 3 gti bottam end, and use my head and running gear except for a mk1 gti cam. mine has hydraulic tappets, what age gti`s had hydrauulic tappets.
is this as easy conversion as it sounds, no hidden probelms or out, but i guess there wont be as i will am only really changing my bottom end. i am not to clued up on engines so will the mk3 bottam end just bolt on my head (same shape etc as my mk1) also engine mounts all ok, or is it mounted on the head
thanks for your help in advance

thanks mark

hi mate im doin the same conversion at the moment,
the stuff you need is:
your 8v head
2ltr bottom end
your dizzy and adaptor plate from tsr
plate to cover oil breather on the 2ltr also from tsr
either g/b
clutch to match g/b
im not sure about the exhaust manifold though because the 2ltr is 15-20mm higher than the 1.8
and I think the driveshafts are the same on the 020 g/b's so should be ok there
hope this helps mate

Found my standard gti manifold and downpipe fit fine . I have a distributer conversion ring here if anyone needs one ? , just  finished a digifant conversion so i can use the standard 2e dizzy .Engine bottom end needs to be a 2e ideally .  you can use ady engine codes but you then need to change the sump and oil pump for 2e items . For cams you need a PB engine code 1.8 gti cam fitted to mk2 88-92 . You can use all the standard mk1 engine mounts , and as long as the gearbox and clutch and flywheel in your car is in good order i'd use them as it all bolts straight up . The only thing you may have to do is fit a pancake style ail filter as i dont know if there's enough clearence for the standard Vw airbox ?.
