Gearbox for my ABF conversion

Hi all hope you can help,

I purchased the new engine for the start of my conversion and need to know what is the best gearbox for it.

I have the mk3 gti 16v ABF engine and as far as im aware I require a mk3 gti 8v gearbox please can someone confirm or give me a suggestion for something else.

Cheers

Ross

There are a few different boxes that wud fit mate, u cud go for the 020 gearbox which I think was off the mk2 1.8 16v engine and this wud bolt straight on no hassle, this wud probly be the best bet cuz if ur using the mk1 gear linkage then u wudnt need to change anything ova, there is another option which is the route I am taking with my 2.0 abf engine and that's using the 02a box but this uses a cable change instead of the rod (ud get on the mk1) and this also needs a hydraulic clutch setup but it in my opinion but give u a smoother gear change but there might be other boxes that wud fit but I ent to sure

Hope this helps

Can use original 8v box, I'm taking mine off though as ratios are too short for my power/driving. I'm going o2a but cable clutch method :)

Same as above, o2a off of a seat 16v abf has cable clutch, saves messing around with hydraulic set-up and is made to take the power etc.

hi mate, fit the cable change box they last longer but it is funny running a 4+e on a ABF,done afue conversions in my time, doing a ABF at the moment using Seat cablebox etc,….Plus with the cable change box you can carry out the 5th gear conversion to a taller gear ratio, last ABF mk2 golf with 02j box we done was good for 171mph according to the tomtom & still had more to go,….Plus make sure you fit a good clutch,vr or g60 clutch & flywheel would do,Think sachs do a uprated clutch kit for the ABF which is good at high rpm.

My second hijack of the day!

Is opinion still the same on this? I'm swayed by the better matched ratios of the abf factory box, but is the cable and hydraulic conversion the way to go? And…anyone out there got everything I need to do the conversion?

020 gearbox is fine on a mk1 abf with only mild modifications, you dont need the hydro box unless you go mental power

I'm running 020 gearboxes on both my modded 16V's, diff rivets are a known weak point on these gearboxes so I've replaced the rivets with ARP bolts in both of them. We are lucky in that all the 5-speed Citi Golfs came out with DGG/FFZ gearboxes with ideal ratios for this type of conversion.

Cheers guys, Just the comfort I needed.  An 020 rebuilt box with uprated diff bolts has been purchased.  It'll be on the car by saturday night!

My ABF still stutters so a little remap after I check injectors etc will be undertaken.  If I see 170BHP, I'll be happy, especially with decent ratios, a clutch that doesn't slip and a pair of tyres that actually grip the road :-)

With new clutch, old oil soaked plate being used in an attempt to beat any previous frisbee'd clutch plate, from Glasgow to a very specific north facing window 400miles south at Bridgwater!!!     :@
