There was no 1981 GTI on my side of the world, so it is worth more.
To me, at least.

Any car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, whether it be a Mk1 or a Veyron.
I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines

The price guide gives a reasonable view on prices, and also stresses that condition is important, not just the year/model etc.

If it was an early V-reg 1.6 I'd go with that but if the option was a '81 1.6 thing I'd go for the 1.8.
The V-reg would be nice and rare esp if mint but a '81 has no advantages over a 1.8 and some disadvantages. (stands back and waits for a kicking from the 1.6 lovers)

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet
The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Ok thanks
The reason i asked was because the price guide seems to think the 83 1.8 is worth at least 1k more. I didn't think that was right imo i think they should be pretty much the same.

Many people have questioned the price guide but nobody's stepped up to actually improve on it significantly, hence it remains the same.

I agree paul, but it'd be a massive job and it'd need more than one of us!!!
To be honest the prices just need adjusting up a touch maybe.
I might have a look in my spare time and see if i can cobble something together. will take a while though lmao
I would rather have the 1.6 as i like the earlier engine to be honest. But then again the 1.8 is quicker and (I believe?) more economical due to the torque increase.
Swings and roundabouts really!
Jon.

Early 1.6 are ~80kg lighter than late 1.8
